Free online courses given by the Hebrew University

Hebrew University of Jerusalem professors are giving lectures over the Internet to millions of people around the world.

 

Although they will not lead to formal degrees or turn those who take them into doctors, lawyers or engineers, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is making free courses by top lecturers available online to millions of people around the world.

The university has partnered with an organization called Coursera, which offers about 200 undergraduate and graduate courses in a broad range of disciplines, including medicine, literature, history and computer science.

WASHINGTON – Professor Yuval Shany, dean at the Hebrew University’s law faculty who was elected to serve on the UN’s Human Rights Committee, was celebrating his achievement on Thursday night.

Speaking of his new role, Shany praised the Foreign Ministry and Israel’s mission to the UN who managed to push the decision after a lengthy diplomatic campaign.

“The fact that Israel was elected to a body with so many hostile countries and others, who see Israel as a human rights violator is not a trivial matter,” Shany told Ynet. Continue Reading »

High Holiday services to be held at Alexandria Synagogue

A member of the Jewish community of Alexandria on Monday denied reports that Egyptian authorities had canceled Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur prayers in the city citing security concerns saying he would personally lead the services during the High Holidays.

The latest int’l travel advisory warns tourists that Israel periodically conducts military operations in the West Bank & Gaza, with no prior notice, & also advises travelers to avoid demonstrations.

Israel has long starred in other countries’ travel advisories, and reading these warnings isn’t particularly flattering.

The warnings about terror attacks are predictable: Most countries urge their citizens to stay alert while visiting Israel and to avoid certain areas, such as Gaza, the Lebanese and Egyptian borders, and sometimes the West Bank – though no country has yet included a warning about the Iranian threat.

Lily Hyde, 96, from Australia says of her aliya, ‘dream come true’

Australian, Lily Hyde, leaves her home for Tel Aviv, probably the oldest Australian ever to immigrate to Israel.

SYDNEY — A 96-year-old woman from Australia is immigrating to Israel.

Lily Hyde will leave the Sir Moses Montefiore Jewish Home in Sydney on Wednesday morning for Tel Aviv, where she will be reunited with her family. She is believed to be the oldest Australian ever to immigrate to Israel.

After Germany, where attempts to ban circumcision have caused an uproar, the issue is now making headlines in Denmark as well.

The anti-circumcision campaign in Denmark began already several years ago, but seems to have reached new heights, after an article published in the local Politiken newspaper described circumcision as a ritual involving ten people wearing black clothes and which abuses and tortures the baby.

U.S. baseball All Star Kevin Youkilis planning to join Israel team in World Classic

Former MLB player Brad Ausmus has signed on as coach & retired players  Gabe Kapler &  Shawn Green have agreed to assist as coaches & players for Team Israel.

Chicago White Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis said he will play for Israel at the World Baseball Classic.

Youkilis told Israel Sports Radio Wednesday that he would play for Team Israel if he is healthy. This season, the three-time All Star is hitting .241 with 15 home runs and 47 runs batted in. He has been hampered by injuries for much of the past three seasons.

First German Rabbi faces criminal charges over anti-circumcision ruling

A German rabbi has been criminally charged for performing a circumcision, committing what the indictment calls “bodily harm,” media outlets reported on Tuesday.

The lawsuit against David Goldberg, who is a mohel and the Rabbi of the city of Hof Saale in Bavaria, is the first known case following the anti-circumcision ruling issued by a German court in May.

According to media reports, the charges were filed by a physician from the city of Hessen, and was based on the court ruling which stated that performing a religious circumcision ritual can be considered a crime. Continue Reading »
