In a rare public spat between what were once two of Israel’s highest-ranking politicians, former prime minister Ehud Olmert said he did not trust Defense Minister Ehud Barak with Israel’s most serious military matters, in a Channel 2 investigative report aired Monday.

“I would very much prefer that this large a responsibility on these subjects (such as the Iranian nuclear program) will be in the hands of somebody else, not his,” Olmert said.

Italian PM Monti: Europe’s security tied up with Israel’s security

Prime Minister Mario Monti on his diplomatic visit to Israel: “any threat to Israel is unacceptable,” in reference to Iran’s nuclear program.

“We absolutely reject threats to regional stability and denial of the Holocaust,” Monti said in reference to Iran. “Any threat to Israel is unacceptable.”

Monti said that the sanctions against Iran were effective and undoubtedly had an influence in disrupting the Iranian economy, and were likely to bring about a change in Tehran’s nuclear program. Continue Reading »

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu calls for elections ‘as soon as possible’

PM Netanyahu announces elections, which could be as soon as January, because of  Knesset’s inability to pass “responsible” budget.

 

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu ignited an expedited election campaign Tuesday night when he called for early elections to take place.

In a statement delivered at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem, Netanyahu said that after completing a round of meetings with his coalition partners, he concluded he could not pass the 2013 state budget and has no choice but to initiate elections.

“My obligation as prime minister is to put the national interest above all else, and therefore I decided that the good of Israel requires going to elections now, as soon as possible,” Netanyahu said.

Obama refuses to meet Netanyahu during his visit to U.S.

White House says scheduling and election campaign are reasons for not having a meeting. WH decision comes after Netanyahu’s declaration that those (the WH) who don’t place “red lines” on Iran, have no right to give Israel a “red light.”

 

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will not meet US President Barack Obama when he visits the United states later this month for the UN General Assembly in New York. Obama will not be in New York during the three-day period Netanyahu is visiting, and noted that the US president is in the middle of an election campaign.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has backtracked on a request to make changes to his foreign and domestic investment portfolio, saying he wants to avoid fueling rumors about a potential strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.

A special committee in the State Comptroller’s Office’s approved the prime minister’s request on August 15. In its decision, it stated that given the volatility of the global and Israeli economies, “there is a need to allow additional instructions to be made to the trustee of [Netanyahu’s] blind trust.”

Speaking to the Bethlehem-based Ma’an news agency, Erekat said Abbas wants Israel to free 123 prisoners detained before the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993.

PM, Mofaz form largest coalition in 28 years

Poll: 44% of Israelis back Likud-Kadima unity government deal, 37% oppose it.

 

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu shocked the political establishment on Tuesday by delaying planned early elections and signing a deal with Kadima to form a 94-MK coalition, the widest coalition since 1984.

The national unity coalition formed by rotating prime ministers Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Shamir had 97 MKs, which was the largest ever, except when Israel formed emergency governments, most notably the Six Day War coalition in 1967 that had 111 MKs.
