WOW! Israelis enter Saudi Arabia for Dakar Rally using their Israel Passports

Despite Saudi Arabia hosting the two Israelis for the Dakar Rally, the race’s website lists them as American & Belgian, a ‘not too subtle’ sign of Riyadh’s reluctance to publicize an official Israeli presence, but still, a historic move forward.

Among the teams dashing around the dunes in their cars at the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia this month, there were two whose presence would have been unthinkable a year ago.

The participation of Israelis in the rally’s lightweight vehicle and truck categories comes after a rapprochement between Israel and Arab states that has been in high gear, fueled by Riyadh’s quiet assent. Continue Reading »

Photo Essay: 48 years after the Israeli Dolphin class submarine Dakar sank

A former Dakar crew member describes what it was like to search for the sunken submarine after he was ordered to return on a different sub from Portsmouth to Haifa, the journey the Dakar never finished.

It’s been almost 50 years since the Israeli Dolphin class submarine Dakar sank in the waters off of Crete. Now, new color pictures are being released of the crew and of the submarine – the last pictures of these young men before their submarine sank to the bottom of the sea, never to surface again.
