Police in Glasgow, Scotland arrested six people over anti-Semitic remarks on Facebook that mocked the Jewish community of Giffnock, the BBC reported Wednesday.

The page, titled “Welcome to Israel, only kidding you’re in Giffnock,” included a number of offensive posts against the Jewish community and received nearly 1,000 “likes” until it was shut down.

Fans of the page posted comments ranging from “Jewish scum” to “F*** the Jewish Zionist” while another person wrote: “Hebrew is not needed in the train station [because] all the Jews are f***ing rich c**** they have gold plated Bentleys,” the Jewish Chronicle reported. Continue Reading »

Launched this week, Jerusalem’s Tower of David Museum’s Facebook page boasts possibly the oldest “Timeline” on the social networking site’s newest technology.

Its birth is dated at 1099, when the Crusaders conquered Jerusalem and established a fortress where the museum stands today.

“A timeline makes perfect sense for us, because we already work based on a timeline,” Rose Ginosar, director of special projects at the museum, told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.

Soldier ‘bans’ Prime Minister from IDF’s Facebook page

Editor of army’s Facebook page deletes a comment left by one Benjamin Netanyahu for being too political, then brags on his personal Facebook page that he ‘banned Bibi.’

When then IDF Spokesman Avi Benayahu told the Herzliya Conference that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had ordered his unit to train soldiers to be “new media warriors,” he probably never imagined that a year later one of those keyboard warriors would brazenly block the prime minister on Facebook.

Netanyahu has a number of Facebook pages: three official pages representing “The Prime Minister of Israel,” in Hebrew, English and Arabic, which are run by editors inside the Prime Minister’s Office, as well a political page run by Likud party spokespeople.

Peres launches official Facebook page

Social network CEO Mark Zuckerberg hosts president during visit to Silicon Valley; helps him launch personal page

WASHINGTON – President Shimon Peres visited social network giant Facebook’s headquarters Tuesday in what he described as an effort to use social networking to mend divides governments have been unable to bridge.

Peres met with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who helped him launch the 88-year-old leader’s personal page aimed at creating a dialogue with young Arabs who live in countries that do not have diplomatic ties with Israel.

Peres, Mark Zuckerberg launch president’s international Facebook page

Peres invited Facebook users around the world to ‘like’ his page and post their own suggestions for advancing world peace.

 

President Shimon Peres and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg launched the president’s international Facebook page on Tuesday, with Zuckerberg to first to press ‘like’ to the page.

The festivities began at 7 P.M. Israel time (9 A.M. P.S.T.), with a live press conference with web surfers from around the world. Peres and Zuckerberg then launched the page officially at 8 P.M. Israel time (10 A.M. P.S.T.).

A surprising connection was formed this week between a Syrian opposition element and IDF Spokesman Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai on the latter’s Facebook page, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Friday.

A Syrian citizen named Abdul Khader wrote the following on Mordechai’s Facebook wall: “We want to get rid of Assad and his regime and modernize Syria by promoting freedom of religion and freedom of thought. Suicide Attempts Cause Facebook Controversy

Activists call to allow teachers greater Facebook freedom as two students attempt suicide over comments on site.

 

 

Two young students attempted suicide this week over bullying, some of which took place on the social networking site Facebook. Now some activists say the tragic case may have been preventable, and are calling on the Education Ministry to change its rules regarding Facebook use.

Rabbi Shai Piron of the Hakol Chinuch movement called Thursday for the Education Ministry to allow teachers to “friend” their students on Facebook. Currently, teachers are forbidden to have any contact with students on social networking sites. Continue Reading »
