Knesset passes legislation to increase support to Holocaust survivors

 

The new Bill calls for additional aid from NIS 100 million to NIS 135 million annually to go directly to survivors, with further annual increases.

 

 

The Knesset approved on Wednesday the second and third (final) readings of a bill to amend the Restitution of Holocaust Victims’ Assets Law.

The measure sets the end of the Company for Location and Restitution of Holocaust Victims’ Assets’ operations as December 31, 2017, as opposed to 2021, as previously stipulated in the law.

The new law also calls for an increase in aid to Holocaust survivors from NIS 100 million to NIS 135m.

Knesset Members mark Int’l Holocaust Remembrance Day at Auschwitz-Birkenau

Lawmakers from 13 countries join Israeli delegation at concentration camp in Poland which includes more than 250 people, including 60 MKs.

 

 

The largest-ever delegation of MKs, plus hundreds of Israelis and Jewish politicians from around the world are scheduled to head to Poland early Monday morning for a joint Israeli-Polish ceremony at Auschwitz-Birkenau on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Coalition chairman Yariv Levin (Likud Beytenu) and opposition leader Isaac Herzog (Labor) will lead the delegation, as Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein pulled out of the trip following the death of his wife on Friday.

“Seven decades after millions of members of our nation were cruelly murdered by the Nazis, it is my privilege and responsibility to lead the largest delegation of the Knesset, the parliament of the independent Jewish state, to the valley of death of Auschwitz-Birkenau,” Levin said Sunday. A Holocaust survivor dies every 45 minutes.

More than a thousand Holocaust survivors pass away every month, and the average age of those who live among us, some of them in extreme poverty, is 85 years of age, according to figures published Monday by the Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel.

Treasury marks a victory over diminishing group of Holocaust survivors

The Finance Ministry’s legal department has defeated another group of Holocaust survivors. Congratulations. It’s an achievement they can hang on their walls as a badge of shame.

This week’s courtroom victory came after a legal battle lasting more than a decade by a group of Holocaust survivors known as the “Tehran children.” The group, whose number has naturally dwindled in recent years, originally consisted of some 1,200 Jewish children from Poland who went to the Soviet Union, then to Iran and finally to pre-state Israel in 1943. A teacher at a school in Greece will present recently discovered graduation certificates to 157 Jewish students who fled Thessaloniki or were deported to Nazi death camps, or to their descendants.

The Swiss-Jewish weekly Tachles said the figure was contained in a report by New York judge Edward Korman, who oversees the management of the fund

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu announced Sunday that he had ordered the transfer of 50 million shekels to Holocaust survivors.

Speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said he had agreed on the amount with Finance Minister Yair Lapid.

He also addressed a wave of recent attacks on the elderly saying that the government would “apply its full weight” to prevent such crimes and to punish the perpetrators.

Yesh Atid deal makes $millions for Holocaust survivors available

The coalition agreement between Yesh Atid and Likud-Beiteinu calls to increase the services package for Holocaust survivors by NIS 110 million (about $30M) in 2013 and by an additional NIS 500 million ($135M) in the next four years.

Holocaust survivors protest for 3rd year against Allianz golf tournament

NEW YORK  — Holocaust survivors for a third straight year protested outside a golf tournament in Florida sponsored by Allianz because of what they deem the insurance firm’s restitution failures.

Foundation unable to continue Holocaust survivors’ benefits

The Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel finds itself unable to reimburse elderly beneficiaries for medical services, blames gov’t for inadequate budget.

The Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel has suspended the transfer of funds to over 8,000 survivors eligible for benefits, Ynet has learned.

The frozen funds were meant to reimburse survivors for medical bills of up to NIS 4,000 (roughly $1,000), which they have already paid out of pocket. To be eligible for the benefits, the survivors’ monthly income must not exceed NIS 8,158 ($2,100). Continue Reading »
