Egypt intercepts 108 explosive warheads from Libya via Sinai & onto Gaza

Egyptian security officials confiscated trucks carrying a variety of small-arms ammunition and 108 explosive warheads for Soviet-designed Grad rockets, that were smuggled from Libya.

Egyptian security officials said Wednesday that authorities have confiscated trucks carrying explosive warheads and a variety of small-arms ammunition smuggled from Libya.

They said authorities seized the pickup trucks, carrying some 108 warheads for Soviet-designed Grad rockets, near Marsa Matruh, 430 kilometers (270 miles) northwest of Cairo on the Mediterranean coast.

Morsi threatens: Israel will pay heavy price

Report: Israel’s Ambassador to Egypt Summoned to Jerusalem

Egyptian media reports that Israeli ambassador Yaakov Amitai has left Cairo after being recalled by the foreign ministry.

Israeli ambassador to Egypt, Yaakov Amitai, reportedly left Cairo on Wednesday night, the website of the Egyptian Al-Ahram newspaper reported.

Sources at the Cairo International Airport told the newspaper that Amitai left on a Jordanian Airlines flight.

Amitai, who has been Israeli ambassador to Egypt since December 2011, was summoned earlier by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, which sought to convey the Egyptian authorities’ condemnation of the Israeli air raids on Gaza.

At the same time, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi recalled the Egyptian ambassador to Israel, Atef Mohamed Salem, in a move of protest against Israel. Continue Reading »

Egypt has recalled its ambassador in Israel, Yasser Ridha, following the assassination of top Hamas military commander Ahmed Jabari, Egyptian TV reported Wednesday. It is still unclear whether the envoy is being called back for consultations or for a longer period. Egypt has told Hamas it will not intervene on its behalf if the current wave of violence on the Gaza-Israeli border continues, a senior Egyptian official told Israel Hayom on Monday night.

While not explicitly calling for a cease-fire, the statement appears to be a message from Egypt to Hamas to stop the rocket fire.

Egyptian Court Rejects Petition to Nullify Egypt’s Peace Treaty with Israel

Israel Radio reported that the court in Cairo decreed it lacks the authority to rule on matters of Egyptian sovereignty, saying only the president could make such decisions.

A court that deals with administrative issues in Cairo rejected a petition to cancel the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel on Tuesday, according to a report by Israel Radio.

The court reportedly ruled that it does not have the legal right to decide on the treaty as it is a matter of sovereignty rather than legality.

Egyptian jurists and politicians have issued calls to “liberate” the Al Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount, and to restore Egypt’s leading role in the Arab world.

NEW YORK – Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi on Wednesday urged the international community to work immediately toward the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within “all the occupied territories.”

In a belligerent debut speech before the UN General Assembly, Egypt‘s first democratically-elected president called for immediate progress that would “put an end to the colonialism and the settlements and change the identity of occupied Jerusalem.”

Three months after winning the general elections as the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood movement, Morsi told the UN, “I am the first Egyptian president who was elected in a democratic vote at the end of the revolution.” Continue Reading »

Israel’s FM Rejects any Amendments to Peace Treaty with Egypt

Israel has rejected the idea of any modification to its 1979 peace treaty with Egypt.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman dismissed any possibility of altering the treaty during a radio interview in Israel Sunday morning. “There is not the slightest possibility that Israel will accept the modification of the peace treaty with Israel,” he said, according to AFP. “We will not accept any modification of the Camp David Accords.

The comments came as tensions rise between Egypt and Israel, with speculation the government of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood-backed President Mohammed Morsi is considering a plan to alter parts of the treaty. Continue Reading »
