Egypt Will Try 5 Suspected Mossad ‘Spies’ in Absentia

Five alleged officers from Israel’s Mossad spy agency and three Egyptians will stand trial in absentia on Wednesday in an Egyptian court, on charges of spying for the Jewish state, judicial sources said.

Egyptian prosecutors have accused the eight of espionage and supplying Israel with information impacting Egypt’s national security, the sources said on Sunday.

The trial is expected to open with none of the defendants present, the sources said, because the alleged Mossad officers are “on the run” while it is not clear if the three Egyptians had been arrested. Continue Reading »

Israel has returned 90 stolen antiquities to Cairo

Returned Home: The Egyptian authorities noticed online that the stolen collection had been originally put on the auction block by a Jerusalem based auction house.

 

Israel has returned a collection of 90 antiquities after discovering that the artifacts – presented for sale at auction – had been stolen, Egyptian authorities said on Monday.

The collection reportedly included clay vessels and vases, stelae and cultic figurines.

Antiquities theft is a huge problem for archaeologists. Not only are precious and irreplaceable remains of ancient cultures lost to science and humanity at large: often the timeline of digs are destroyed by robbers plowing through the layers with disregard for the historic record. Israel has urged the US to back the Egyptian military, saying losing Egypt to Islamists could pose a risk the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

According to an Israeli official quoted by the paper, Egypt and Saudi Arabia have traditionally played an important role in providing the Palestinians the support to stay in the negotiations and to make concessions, and without them there is a chance the talks will fail.

Egypt’s Tamarod party calls on gov’t to cancel Israel peace treaty & stop US aid

 

The Tamarod movement played a major role in the ousting of President Morsi, is now demanding a referendum on banning US aid, canceling the peace agreement with Israel, & rewording security-related treaties to allow Egypt to “revive its national sovereignty”.

The Tamarod (“Rebellion”) movement in Egypt has joined a campaign calling to stop US aid to Egypt, and to cancel the 1979 Camp David peace treaty with Israel, Daily News Egypt reported on Saturday.

NYT Report: Israel promised General al-Sisi US military aid would continue

 

The New York Times reported Western diplomats saying Israel & Egyptian defense ministers are maintaining constant communication even as blood flows in streets of Egypt.

According to sources, Israel doesn’t give any weight to the US threat to cut Egyptian aid.

Egyptian nuclear scientist fled to Israel: Temple Mount Belongs to Jews

Gunfire erupted in Egypt Sunday near the Israeli border, most probably as a result of clashes between the Egyptian army and an armed cell spotted in the vicinity of the Israel-Egypt border, in the northern area of Kadesh-Barnea.

An IDF outlook identified the cell moving in a car along the Egyptian side of the border. As a result of the clashes, the IDF has bolstered forces in the region. No injuries were reported on the Israeli side. Continue Reading »

An Egyptian court has sentenced an Israeli citizen in his 30s to two years in prison after he was convicted of illegal infiltration into Egypt, Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

Gavriel Avo was arrested a month ago while trying to infiltrate into Taba via the border in Eilat.

TV2 Report: Israel & Hamas Holding Secret Negotiations via Egypt

Within the framework of secret talks with Hamas through the Egyptians, Israel may soon agree that Egypt’s border with Gaza be opened.

Israel has been holding secret negotiations with the Hamas terror movement since the end of its Operation Pillar of Defense, Channel 2 News reported on Friday.

According to the report, the Egyptian-mediated talks are being held as part of the ceasefire reached between the sides at the end of counterterrorism operation in November and which said that both sides will refrain from attacking one another and the sides will work to reach understandings.
