Holocaust heirs sue Swiss bank for selling family artwork without consent

Rather than looking for surviving relatives to deliver proceeds from art sales, Swiss banking giant USB is accused of exploiting family name in creating a bogus foundation.

 

Heirs of a German-Jewish couple whose vast art collection was confiscated by the Nazis have filed lawsuits against a Swiss bank they accuse of cheating them out of their inheritance.

The lawsuits were filed recently in New York and Switzerland against global banking giant UBS and a foundation it controls, the New York Times reported on Friday.

According to the relatives of Ludwig and Margret Kainer, the bank claimed to be acting on behalf of the couple’s heirs, but instead channeled proceeds from art sales and German reparations to a foundation created by Swiss bank officials. Continue Reading »

Catholic Church in Poland Unveils 18th Century Blood Libel Painting

On Thursday for the Catholic Church‘s Int’l Day of Judaism, a controversial picture was uncovered to expose realities of the church’s anti-Semitic past.

The Catholic Church of Poland unveiled a painting on Thursday that had been kept hidden since 2006, after protests from both Catholics and Jews opposed the depiction of Jews murdering Christian children in the classic anti-Semitic blood libel trope.

The painting, an 18th century CE work by Italian painter Charles de Prevot called “Mord Rytualny (Ritual Murder),” has been mounted on a wall at the cathedral in Sandomierz but hidden behind a red curtain for the past 8 years due to its contents. Continue Reading »

Stolen Paintings to be Returned to Jewish Owners

The heirs of 2 Jewish families whose paintings were stolen during World War II will receive 7 paintings from France.

France will return seven paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries to the heirs of two Jewish families whose artworks were stolen during World War II, the French culture ministry told AFP on Thursday.

Six paintings by Italian and German artists will be returned to Thomas Selldorff, the octogenarian grandson of Austrian textile magnate Richard Neumann, who was forced to flee his country in 1938.

Neumann came with part of his art collection to Paris but fled to Spain when the Nazis occupied France and eventually reached Cuba, where he settled. Continue Reading »
