Denied parole: Imprisoned Israeli-Arab parliamentarian for aiding terrorists

Israel Prison Service Parole Board: Former Joint Arab List MK Basel Ghattas, who is serving a 2-year sentence for smuggling cellphones to incarcerated Palestinian security offenders, did not express any remorse for ‎his actions, which could have seriously affected Israel’s security.

The Israel Prison Service Parole Board on Tuesday ‎‎denied an appeal for early release by former Joint Arab List MK ‎‎Basel Ghattas,‎ saying he has expressed no remorse for ‎‎his crimes. ‎

Ghattas is serving a two-year sentence for smuggling ‎cellphones and other materials to ‎Palestinian ‎security prisoners. He is serving his sentence ‎in ‎ Eshel Prison, near Beersheba.‎ Continue Reading »

Indictment charges brought against the Arab Knesset Member are: unlawfully bringing communication devices into a prison, fraud, breach of trust, use of property for purposes of terrorism and fraudulently obtaining benefits.

MK Basel Ghattas (Joint List) was indicted on Thursday for smuggling cellphones to Palestinian security prisoners in Israel jails.

The offenses Ghattas will be charged with are: Bringing in documents not through the prison administration, bringing in communication devices, use of property for purposes of terrorism, fraud and breach of trust by a public worker, fraudulently obtaining benefits under aggravated circumstances. Israeli Arab lawmaker suspected of smuggling phones to imprisoned Palestinians

 

Speaking about the Joint List, the Arab political party that holds 13 of the 120 seats in Israel’s parliament, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said that the report about Ghattas is “more proof that the Joint List is really a joint list of spies and traitors.”

Israeli police launched an investigation into an Israeli Arab lawmaker for allegedly smuggling cell phones to Palestinians imprisoned in Israel, local media reported Sunday.

Basel Ghattas, a lawmaker from the Balad Party, which is part of the Joint (Arab) List, will be summoned by the police for questioning after the Israel Prison Services said they received information that he was planning to transfer the phones into the Keziot Prison. Continue Reading »
