Trump to renew Military Aid to Egypt after Obama halted it with fall of Islamic Brotherhood

 

Although Egypt has long been one of Washington’s closest allies in the Middle East, Obama halted US military aid with Egypt after the coup d’état that unseated Muslim Brotherhood strongman Mohamed Morsi.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will seek to rebuild the US relationship with Egypt at a Monday meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi focused on security issues and military aid, a senior White House official said on Friday.

“He wants to use President Sisi’s visit to reboot the bilateral relationship and build on the strong connection the two presidents established when they first met in New York last September,” the official told reporters. Continue Reading »

US to provide Cairo with 10 Apache helicopters

 

 

Egypt’s foreign minister Nabil Fahmy was traveling to the United States on Wednesday, his ministry said, a day after Washington decided to provide Cairo with 10 Apache military helicopters.

Washington had imposed a temporary freeze on the delivery of major weapons to Egypt, including the Apaches, following the military-installed authorities’ brutal crackdown on supporters of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi since his ouster last July.

Fahmy is expected to meet officials in Washington and UN chief Ban Ki-moon during his visit.

Israeli officials say US decision to cut Cairo aid may hurt Egypt peace treaty

Former Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, was uncharacteristically blunt in his criticism of US decision, saying the US was “essentially & unwittingly” working against its own interests.

 

 

 

As tensions between the US and Egypt simmered over this week’s American decision to withhold aid to Cairo, Israeli officials said on Thursday that for Jerusalem, preserving Israel’s peace treaty with Egypt is paramount.

Concerned by the outlook for human rights and democracy in Egypt, the US announced on Wednesday it would withhold deliveries of tanks, fighter aircraft, helicopters and missiles as well as hundreds of millions in cash aid.

U.S. Finalizing Delivery of F-16 Fighter Jets to Egypt

The White House decided to expedite transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Egypt despite Morsi’s overthrow.

The United States plans to go through with the delivery of four F-16 fighter jets to Egypt in the coming weeks, despite the overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, U.S. officials told the Reuters news agency on Wednesday.

The clarification came as Washington deliberated whether to call the ouster of Egypt’s elected leader a military coup.

A decision to brand Morsi’s ouster a coup would, by law, require the Obama administration to halt aid to the Egyptian army.

One defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters the delivery of the four F-16s was likely to take place in August. Continue Reading »
