BERLIN – The inclusion of a Spiegel online columnist in a 2012 top-ten list of anti-Semites has sparked a fierce debate in the German media since the beginning of the new year.zaz

The Simon Wiesenthal Center ranked Jakob Augstein ninth for his written attacks on Jews and the State of Israel. He is a columnist for Spiegel online, owns a large stake in the Hamburg-based Der Spiegel magazine, and is owner of the left-wing weekly Der Freitag.

Long before he was elected as Egypt’s president, Mohammed Morsi rejected negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and referred to Jews as “apes and pigs”.

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) has translated and uploaded comments by Morsi, a member of Hamas’s parent movement the Muslim Brotherhood, which he made in 2010 and were posted to the internet. In the comments, Morsi also called to boycott products made in the United States because of its support for Israel.

Imam Accused of Inciting Hatred Against Jews in Tunisia

Tunisian association for minorities has lodged a complaint against Sheikh Ahmed S’hili, accusing him of inciting hatred against Jews in a televised sermon.

A Tunisian support group for minorities said Wednesday that it has lodged a complaint against an imam, accusing him of inciting hatred against Jews in a fiery television sermon.

“We have lodged a complaint with the court of the first instance in Ben Arous against the imam of Rades mosque, Sheikh Ahmed S’hili, for inciting hatred,” the association’s lawyer Kais Baltagi told AFP.

The complaint is based on legislation which stipulates that anyone using media to “incite hatred between races, religions and people” can be jailed for up to three years. Continue Reading »

The UK drops Hebrew from officially recognized languages

The importance of classical Hebrew was recognized almost 600 years ago in England, according to official records.

The U.K. government has dropped Hebrew as an official recognized language for the purpose of teaching it to school children, according to press reports.


The government exclusion of Hebrew from the provided list of officially recognized languages for primary schools could damage Jewish education, the Board of Deputies warned this week.


Education Minister Elizabeth Truss last month announced plans to make it mandatory from September 2014, to teach a foreign language to children aged 7 to 11. Schools must offer at least one of seven recognized languages, excluding Hebrew.

“We advise Israelis who come to Denmark and want to go to the synagogue to wait to don their skull caps until they enter the building and not to wear them in the street, irrespective of whether the areas they are visiting are seen as being safe,” Israel’s ambassador to Denmark, Arthur Avnon, told AFP. UK’s Leading ‘Palestine’ Group accused of Anti-Semitism

A controversial new website levels a series of severe accusations at the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), the UK’s leading anti-Israel group. ‘Exposing the Palestine Solidarity Campaign’ alleges that extremism, support for terrorism, anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry are “an institutionalized problem” within the PSC.

One of the site’s founders spoke exclusively to Arutz Sheva – on condition of anonymity – about the motivations behind the initiative.

‘It’s about telling the truth,’ he said, ‘and shattering the illusion that groups such as the PSC care one bit about human rights.

Media magnate Rupert Murdoch stirred an online row with a weekend tweet complaining about the “Jewish-owned” press and a subsequent apology did not appear to have calmed the furor.

Murdoch, whose News Corporation empire includes HarperCollins publishers, Fox television, BSkyB, The Wall Street Journal and the London Times, wrote Saturday on Twitter: “Why is Jewish owned press so consistently anti-Israel in every crisis?”

LONDON – A well-known Irish broadcaster has referred to Israel as a “cancer” in foreign affairs as it “stole land from the Arabs.”

In a topical discussion about the final American presidential debate last week – which focused on foreign policy – Vincent Browne, the host of Ireland’s TV3 “Tonight” program, complained that the “issue of Israel” was hardly mentioned.

Last week Italian education minister Francesco Profumo proposed that Islam be taught in public schools alongside the traditional teaching of Catholicism, while Bishop Mariano Crociata, secretary general of the Italian Episcopal Conference, announced that the Vatican is in favor of building new mosques in Italy.
