Despite win, Egypt’s new president will have his hands tied

The Muslim Brotherhood has won the presidency and nearly half the seats in the Egyptian parliament, but it will still have to tread lightly with its domestic and foreign policies.

The commotion was expected. As soon as Farouk Sultan, the chairman of Egypt’s election committee, began reading out loud on live television the number of votes received by Mohammed Morsi, the country’s first Islamist president ‏(more than 13 million‏), the crowd stopped him with their loud shouts − some of them happy and some angry.

Only then, in that electrifying moment, after more than an hour of hearing tiresome details of the appeals filed with the committee, did it become clear that Morsi won with a lead of slightly under 1 million votes, in a country of 85 million. Continue Reading »

You have to hand it to the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood. They know how to play power politics. They know how to acquire power. And they know how to use power.

Last Friday, the day before voters by most accounts elected the Brotherhood’s candidate Mohamed Morsy to serve as Egypt’s next president, The Wall Street Journal published a riveting account by Charles Levinson and Matt Bradley of how the Brotherhood outmaneuvered the secular revolutionaries to take control of the country’s political space. Egyptians foil infiltration attempt

Infiltration of 36 African migrants to Israel prevented due to coordination between IDF, Sinai security forces

Egyptian forces prevented the infiltration of African migrants into Israel over the weekend. On Friday, an IDF force stationed in the Eilat Mountains detected a group of 36 people trying to cross the border, where a fence has yet to been erected. They then alerted the Egyptian forces who foiled the attempt, unlike most cases.

According to available details, IDF soldiers had warned the infiltrators not to cross the border as the Egyptian officers arrived at the scene and prevented the infiltration.

IDF forces deployed along the border witness shooting incidents involving the Egyptian forces and Bedouins who try to smuggle narcotics, weapons and infiltrators into Israel on a daily basis. Continue Reading »

Once hailed as a symbol of Palestinian statehood dreams, the carrier is a tiny operation, with just two 48-seat turboprop planes, two weekly flights and a borrowed hub in Egypt.

Palestinian Airlines is back in the skies after being grounded for seven years by the deepening enmities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Once hailed as a symbol of Palestinian statehood dreams, the carrier is a tiny operation, with just two 48-seat turboprop planes, two weekly flights and a borrowed hub in Egypt.

But Palestinians say just being on the map again is what matters. “My hands were shaking when I bought the ticket… and it said the name of the carrier is Palestinian Airlines,” said recent passenger Zuhair Mohammed, a 38 year-old teacher from Gaza. Continue Reading »
