Native North American academic association is newest group to declare their support for boycotting of Israeli academic institutions.

 

 

 

Another small North American academic association – the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA) –  decided this week to boycott Israeli academic institutions.

Ohio State English professor Chadwick Allen, the president of the association and coordinator of American Indian Studies at Ohio State, wrote on the association’s website that the move followed a “member-generated” petition asking that the group “formally support the Boycott of Israeli Academic and Cultural Institutions that was initiated by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.” Continue Reading »

Many American scholars regret ‘misguided’ ASA boycott of Israeli academia

ASA scholars stand behind the symbolic decision to boycott, but many of their colleagues worry that Israel-bashing has become too trendy in U.S. academia.

 

 

As the American Studies Association endorsed a boycott of Israeli universities and academic institutions Monday, colleagues at the Association for Jewish Studies gathered in Boston for their annual conference where several called the boycott “misguided” and even “offensive”.

The ASA boycott, which is effectively more a symbolic than practical blow to Israel, was waged in protest of what the organization termed Israel’s human rights violations against Palestinians and its occupation of Palestinian lands. Continue Reading »

U.S. academic association endorses academic boycott of Israel


5,000 members strong, the American Studies Association, cites ‘Israel’s violation of int’l law & UN resolutions’ as reasons to boycott Israeli academic institutions.

The American Studies Association has endorsed a boycott of Israeli academic institutions in a vote that took place over the past few days, the organization said on Monday.

Out of the 1,252 members who participated in the vote, 66 percent voted in support of the boycott. The voting was conducted electronically

The Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved the “NGO Law” Sunday by a large margin of 8 to 4 despite opposition from Justice Minister Tzipi Livni (Hatnua). Livni said that she intends to appeal the decision. This means that the Committee will have to vote on the bill again at a later date.

Knesset Considers Bill That Would Levy Heavy Tax on Anti-Zionism Support

An anti-leftist, anti-boycott bill which was discussed under the previous Knesset will come to the fore again Sunday, according to Maariv. The Knesset hearing will be headed by MK Ayelet Shaked (Bayit Yehudi/Jewish Home) and Robert Ilatov (Yisrael Beytenu).

The bill has sparked controversy for imposing a 45% tax on foreign donations to leftist groups. The goal of the bill is to “reduce the involvement of foreign entities within the affairs of the state of Israel.” Continue Reading »

Dutch Water Company Kills Deal with Israel After UK Threat

Vitens water provider cuts ties with Israeli water company Mekorot over UK objections to presence in Judea & Samaria.

The British gov’t sent letter of warning against business involvement.

Vitens, the largest drinking water company in Holland, announced on Tuesday it would cut business ties with the Israeli water company Mekorot due to its presence in Judea and Samaria. Meanwhile the British government has similarly raised tensions with Israel through financial sanctions.

American Professors call on Students Association to vote against Israel boycott

 

 

The American Studies Association said that it will withdraw the resolution if a majority of the ASA’s voting members do not vote to endorse the boycott resolution by December 15.

In an open letter to American Studies Association members published Dec. 6, two days after the ASA’s 20-member national council approved the boycott resolution, the American Association of University Professors, or AAUP, which says it opposes academic boycotts as violations of academic freedom, wrote that it “recognizes the right of individual scholars to act in accordance with their own personal consciences.” Continue Reading »

BERLIN – The Frankfurt-based FSV second league football club terminated its advertising contract with the Saudi Arabian airline “Saudia” because it refuses to sell tickets to Israeli citizens. The Berliner Morgenpost reported on Wednesday in an article titled “Second division Frankfurt ends sponsorship because of anti-Semitism.”

American Studies leaders back Israeli boycott, ask members to vote

The 20-member national council approved the boycott resolution unanimously, but full body endorsement is still pending.

The boycott will not inhibit collaboration with individual Israeli academics, the statement said.

The American Studies Association leadership on Wednesday endorsed a boycott of Israeli universities, but also sought the approval of the body’s 5,000 members.The decision follows a contentious debate at the group’s annual meeting last month and 10 days of deliberations that were supposed to last a morning. The boycott resolution was approved unanimously by the 20-member national council.

At American Studies Association, 37 speakers of 44 supported resolution boycotting Israel

At the annual meeting of the American Studies Association, participants who favored boycotting Israeli universities far outnumbered those opposed.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — For 90 minutes in a packed hotel conference room in the heart of Washington, Israel was the colonizer, the settler state, the perpetrator of apartheid.

As the annual meeting this weekend of the American Studies Association demonstrated, participants who favored boycotting Israeli universities far outnumbered those opposed.

Of 44 speakers, 37 supported the resolution, in which the association would endorse and “honor the call of Palestinian society for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions.” The preamble to the resolution accused Israeli universities of complicity in the occupation.

Roger Waters’ Open letter calls on all musicians to boycott Israel

British rocker Roger Waters published an open letter calling on fellow musicians to join a boycott of Israel.

The letter, which condemns Israel for apartheid and ethnic cleansing, has been expected for several months, according to the Electronic Intifada, which first reported on its existence.

“I write to you now, my brothers and sisters in the family of Rock and Roll, to ask you to join with me, and thousands of other artists around the world, to declare a cultural boycott on Israel,” Waters wrote in the letter dated August 18.

British rock legend Eric Burdon has canceled a scheduled August 1 appearance of Eric Burdon and The Animals in Israel after receiving threats, his management announced Tuesday.

“We’ve been receiving mounting pressure, including numerous threatening emails, daily.

The last thing I intend do is put Eric in jeopardy,” said a statement released by Burdon’s management. Burdon, 71, and his reconstituted Animals were scheduled to appear at the Zappa Shoni Amphitheater on a bill with 1980s local favorites Tislam.
