PA Pissed-Off After Canada’s FM John Baird Meets Livni in Eastern Jerusalem

Canada’s FM meeting Justice Minister Livni in her eastern Jerusalem office is a “slap in the face”, says former PA FM Nabil Shaath.

“The Canadians have been making a name for themselves by speaking out on the int’l scene in a way which is all too rare,” Israeli FM spokesman Yigal Palmor added, saying they were demonstrating an unusual “courage & moral stance”.

The Palestinian Authority is fuming after Canada’s Foreign Minister, John Baird, met Israel’s Justice Minister Tzipi Livni in her eastern Jerusalem office this week.

Article IV of the Faisal-Weizmann Agreement agreement states the following:

“All necessary measures shall be taken to encourage and stimulate immigration of Jews into Palestine on a large scale, and as quickly as possible to settle Jewish immigrants upon the land through closer settlement and intensive” cultivation of the soil.

Egalitarian section proposed for Jerusalem’s Western Wall

Plan by Natan Sharansky would mark dramatic step toward pluralism at Judaism’s holy site.

 

Natan Sharansky, chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, will present a plan today to expand the Western Wall plaza in Jerusalem to include a new section for egalitarian prayer to American Jewish religious leaders, the Forward has learned.

If implemented, the proposal, a product of months of deliberation, would mark a dramatic acknowledgement by the state of Israel that prayer at the Wall — regarded as Judaism’s holiest site and a modern-day symbol of national sovereignty — should include non-Orthodox practice in which men and women pray together. Women banned by Jerusalem Police from holding Kaddish quorum at Kotel

Jerusalem police commander alerts Anat Hoffman, Women of the Wall chairperson of prohibition in letter, warning that women will be arrested & charged with breaking the law if they breach prohibitions.

Add Kaddish to the list of Jewish prayers and ritual objects women are not allowed to be engaged with at the Western Wall, according to the commander of the Jerusalem police.

In a March 14 letter to Anat Hoffman, chair of Women of the Wall, Commander Yossi Pariente of Israel Police department’s Southern District wrote that he met with a deputy attorney general for the government of Israel to go over the rules pertaining to Women of the Wall, which include prohibitions on:

“…Wrapping yourselves in tallitot [prayer shawls], holding a minyan [prayer quorum] of women including the Kaddish or Kedusha prayers, and reading from the Torah.” Continue Reading »

Palestinians & Jordan sign agreement to protect Jerusalem holy sites

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan’s King Abdullah signed Sunday an agreement by which they pledge to cooperate on protecting holy sites in Jerusalem.

The agreement was signed during Abbas’s visit in Jordan, in the presence of Palestinian Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud al-Habash and his Jordanian counterpart.

According to al-Habash, the agreement was devised in order to coordinate the protection of the al-Aqsa Mosque and all the Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. Continue Reading »

Christians descend on Jerusalem for Good Friday events in the Holy Land

Later today, Protestants & Roman Catholics to walk in processions following Jesus’ footsteps in Jerusalem’s Old City.

 

Hundreds of Christians are marking the crucifixion of Jesus in the Holy Land.

Worshipers have packed Jerusalem’s Holy Sepulcher church, where Jesus is believed to have been crucified, buried and resurrected, for a morning mass that started Good Friday events.

On the second day of his Middle East tour, US President Barack Obama visited the Israel Museum in Jerusalem on Thursday morning.

At the facility, he viewed the Dead Sea Scrolls – ancient Jewish parchments discovered in the West Bank in the 1940s which include secular text dating from the third century BC to the first century AD.

For many years, only a small number of scholars were allowed to view the fragments of the scrolls, but access has since been widened.

Jerusalem Restaurant Closed Over Shabbat Operations

One of Jerusalem’s most popular cafés maneuvered to shut it’s doors after property owner agrees to renew rental license only if business is closed on the Sabbath.

Jerusalem’s Restobar, one of the most popular and well-known cafés among the capital’s secular population, was shut down Monday after eight years of operation.

EU consuls: EU must prevent Jewish housing in East Jerusalem

Some 22 European consuls posted in East Jerusalem & the West Bank, appeal to Brussels to intensify efforts to stop Jewish home building in West Bank, saying it poses ‘single biggest threat’ to peace process.

Unreleased EU report blames Jewish settlements for area violence

 

EU diplomats say Jewish settlements in area E-1 & east Jerusalem threaten peace & are calling for economic sanctions against Israel.

A copy of a report written by EU heads of mission in Jerusalem and Ramallah condemns recent Israeli settlement building and recommends that EU member states place economic sanctions on settlements, AFP reported on Wednesday.

E-1The report referred to Israel’s settlement construction in east Jerusalem as “systematic, deliberate and provocative” and stated that Jewish settlement construction was “the biggest single threat to the two state solution.”

The report singled out as problematic Israeli development in the Jerusalem neighborhoods of Har Homa, Gilo, and Givat Hamatos, as well as Israeli settlement plans in the area known as E1.

Arabs warn US President over Temple Mount visit: ‘Obama better follow the Muslims’ rules’

Obama must enter via ‘Lion’s Gate’ which has Muslim guards, rather than the Mughrabi Gate which is guarded by Israeli police. In this way “Muslim sovereignty” over the Temple Mount will be preserved. Sabri also cautioned Obama not to bring any Israeli officials with him to what is in reality Judaism’s most holy site.
