It’s been 28 years, and there’s still no firm sign that the US intends to release accused Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard. Even for Israeli officials intimately familiar with Washington, the situation is simply incomprehensible.

The Knesset & US Congress jointly urge Obama to release Jonathan Pollard

A joint initiative by Knesset members and the U.S. Congress is calling on President Barack Obama, scheduled to visit Israel in a few weeks, to secure the release of imprisoned Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard in time to bring the news to Israel personally on his visit.

The two politicians behind the initiative, Israeli MK Danny Danon (Likud-Beytenu) and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, met on Thursday to discuss the joint endeavor.

CIA Releases New Details – Pollard did not spy on U.S.

Pollard was asked to provide information on Arab states, Pakistan & the Soviet Union and not on the United States.

Pollard was to collect intel on Pakistan’s nuclear program, Egyptian missile programs, and Iraqi & Syrian chemical warfare production capabilities.

The US administration has allowed the release of secret documents pertaining to the case of convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Sunday.

The main document is a 160-page “damage assessment” report by the Pentagon and the CIA issued after Pollard’s apprehension. A small segment of the report was released in 2006 but the main bulk remained secret until the National Security Archive petitioned for its disclosure. Continue Reading »

Released Documents show Pollard Sought Intel on Arab Nations

Recently declassified CIA documents reveal former Israeli agent foremost sought intel on Arab countries, & not the U.S.

Former Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard primarily sought information about Arab nations and not the United States, AFP, citing newly declassified CIA documents, reported Friday.

Pollard, who is serving a life sentence in a US prison for spying for Israel, told investigators he had been asked foremost for information on Arab or Pakistani nuclear programs and “Arab exotic weaponry,” AFP cited the top secret CIA documents as saying.

The documents also said that Israel “did not request or receive from Pollard intelligence concerning some of the most sensitive US national security resources.”

Convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard must be released, former CIA chief R. James Woolsey wrote in a letter to the editor sent to the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, arguing that one reason Pollard has remained in prison for as long as he has was that he was an American Jew.

Woolsey, who has voiced his support for the release of the convicted spy in the past, wrote in the letter that, while he had “recommended against clemency for Jonathan Pollard early in the first Clinton administration when I was director of Central Intelligence, but now, nearly two decades later, I support his release. Former US Official: Pollard May Yet be Released

Former US undersecretary of defense Lawrence Korb says Jonathan Pollard may yet be released, perhaps in June.

Former undersecretary of defense Lawrence Korb said Tuesday that convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard may be released soon.

“Given Jonathan’s deteriorating health they may consider clemency,” Korb said in remarks that contradicted reports that Pollard’s release was were baseless. “There is a chance.”

Korb also rejected that US President Barack Obama’s silence on an emergency plea for Pollard’s release from Israeli President Shimon Peres on humanitarian grounds was a definite “no” on clemency for Pollard.

President Shimon Peres sent an urgent message to US President Barak Obama asking Jonathan Pollard be pardoned on humanitarian grounds

President Shimon Peres on Monday sent an urgent personal request to US President Barack Obama asking for Jonathan Pollard to be pardoned on humanitarian grounds.

Peres also met with Esther Pollard on Sunday. According to his office, Peres listened carefully as she outlined her husband’s deteriorating condition and implored the President to use all his influence as quickly as possible to ensure that Pollard – who was rushed to a hospital last Friday – is not sent back to prison.
