Prime Minister to refer referendum bill for cabinet vote Sunday

Proposed bill would not require public approval for withdrawal from Judea and Samaria because Israeli law isn’t applicable there, but PM says he has way around that.

 

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to bring in the referendum bill for a cabinet vote on Sunday, and then submit it to the Knesset for a preliminary vote on Wednesday before the parliament disbands for summer recess.

The Knesset plenum approved Yesh Atid‘s draft bill on first reading early Tuesday morning, prompting dramatic acts of protest by haredi legislators. Ultra-Orthodox Knesset members declared Monday a day of mourning and tore the lapels of their shirts to signify their mourning.

The bill, which passed a 66-21 vote, will now be turned over to a special committee presided by MK Ayelet Shaked (Habayit Hayehudi) that will prepare the bill for second and third readings. Continue Reading »

New ‘noise law’ allows Police to enter homes without warrant

The new legislation allows police to enter home if owner doesn’t respond or if the noise violation may do harm to the public’s well-being.

The Knesset on Monday approved in its second and third readings a bill that allows the police to enter private houses under certain circumstances if they are perceived to be violating noise regulations.

The bill, which was submitted by MK Miri Regev (Likud-Beiteinu), the chairwoman of the Knesset’s Internal Affairs and Environment Committee, was supported by 47 lawmakers. Only four MKs voted against the legislation.

The bill permits police to enter the establishment only if there is reason to believe the noise violation is causing significant harm to the public well-being. Continue Reading »

Former Palestinian Terrorist Invited to the Knesset

Both, a senior terrorist’s brother & a former terrorist prisoner are invited to address the Knesset.

Members of Knesset and ministers who support the “two-state solution” and diplomatic talks with the Palestinian Authority have organized a conference that aims to provide a response to the spate of public officials who have recently declared that there is no realistic solution to the Israel-PA conflict on the horizon.

Among the speakers who will appear at the conference Monday are controversial PA figures.

Television crew sneaks 3D printed gun within inches of Israel’s PM

Israel’s Channel 10 report shows how easily Knesset security can be compromised with 3D printing technology as television crew printed plastic gun then snuck it into the Knesset undetected.

How difficult is it to assassinate a prime minister within the highly-secured Knesset compound? Not too difficult, it appears, as new technology enables one to sneak inside with a 3D-printed hand-gun.

A Channel 10 camera crew tested the theory – and managed to walk in to the Knesset twice, carrying a plastic pistol printed according to easily downloadable blueprints.

The problem of “printed weapons” surfaced about two months ago, when Cody Wilson, a 25-year-old student from Texas, designed the first functional hand-gun to be printed, nearly in full, by a 3d printer. Continue Reading »

MKs demand that gas export issue be decided in Knesset

MK Avishay Braverman: If Knesset doesn’t accept decision, it will have no legitimacy.

 

 

On the eve of Sunday’s cabinet session during which a decision on gas exports is scheduled to take place, a number of Knesset members drafted letters to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the other ministers demanding that they transfer the decision to the Knesset.

“In order to help the legislative process of gas export, the Economic Affairs Committee will also work in August,” wrote MK Avishay Braverman (Labor). “The committee will continue discussions in August in order to hear all the sides, of the government, the public and the developers, and will formulate a bill that will be good for the citizens and the economy of Israel.”

Knesset passes bill disallowing Rabbis from taking fee for weddings

 

Local rabbis have been allowed to charge extra fees even though marriages are listed among their existing duties as regional rabbis.

Bill still pending 3 additional Knesset readings before final approval, with 61 MKs voting in favor in the preliminary reading.

A current bill, approved in its preliminary reading on Wednesday, is aiming to prevent local rabbis from accepting payment or any other compensation for officiating the marriage ceremonies of couples who live within their area of jurisdiction.

Israeli ministers consider legislating housing & job preferences for ex-IDF soldiers

New affirmative action legislation, proposed by coalition chairman Yariv Levin, would also include Israelis who’ve completed national service.

This comes in response to early start in job market already enjoyed by those who skipped  the army or national service.

 

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet will decide on Sunday whether to endorse proposed legislation that advocates affirmative action for Israelis who have done military or national service.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a Knesset debate on the Arab Peace Initiative to allay fears in some quarters that his three-month-old coalition is on the rocks – and to urge Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to resume negotiations with Israel.

Education Minister ends Knesset speech because he can’t stop giggling

A reference to “penetration” in a speech to parliament caused Education Minister to burst into a laughing fit that went viral on Tuesday on Israeli websites.

Shai Piron, who is also a rabbi, could not get past the first sentence of his address, on a proposed law against smuggling cell phones into Israel’s prisons, before beginning to chuckle.

Knesset approves law making ‘infiltrators’ transferring money abroad illegal

The new amendment to the ‘Law for the Prevention of Infiltration’ stipulates that foreigners can’t send property while they’re in Israel & limits the amount they can take with them once they exit Israel.

2nd amendment determines that said violations will be considered a crime.

 

 

The Knesset plenum on Monday approved two amendments to the Law for the Prevention of Infiltration barring illegal migrants from sending money or property out of Israel while they are in the country and limiting the amount they can take with them when they leave.

Israeli Democracy at work: Arab MKs seek to outlaw drawings of Muhammad

 

Arab Knesset members seek Israel’s penal code to include a ban on drawings of Muslim prophets, citing Islamic prohibition as precedent.

The new bill would make the portrayal of Muhammad, Moses & Jesus punishable by a full year in prison & would also outlaw the degradation of scripture.

Arab MK Ibrahim Sarsur (Ra’am-Ta’al) has reintroduced legislation that would lower the threshold for what is considered a racist offense and would ban the publication of materials that disparage the Prophet Muhammad through a “cartoon, defamation and insult.” Sarsur is one of three sponsors of the bill, all of whom are from Arab parties.
