IDF opens fire on armed Lebanese cell crossing into Israel

The IDF opened fire on a cell trying to infiltrate into Israel from Lebanon on Sunday.

The IDF said a unit dealing with operational border security identified the cell crossing the Israeli-Lebanese border (the Blue Line).

The unit opened fire with small arms fire, apparently striking one of the suspects.

The Chief of the Northern Command, Major General Yair Golan, met last month with the mayors of communities near Lebanon and addressed concerns from residents that Hezbollah is actively digging tunnels toward Israel.

The Lebanese army has arrested the soldier who shot and killed IDF soldier Shlomi Cohen near the border on Sunday night, Moshe Yaalon said on Tuesday evening.

Yaalon’s comments were made during a tour of the Jordan Valley.

“This is a serious incident and the Lebanese government and the Lebanese army are responsible for this,” he declared, adding that there had been a meeting on Monday between the liaison officers of the Lebanese army and the IDF, attended by members of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), during which the Lebanese army reported the findings of its investigation of the shooting incident. According to Lebanese media, after briefly disappearing in the aftermath of the attack and spending the night “hiding in a bush”, the unnamed soldier reported for duty at the Lebanese General Security post at the Ras al-Naqoura border crossing,  surrendering himself as the site where he committed the shooting just hours earlier. IDF Soldier Killed by Sniper Fire on Lebanon Border

Lebanese sniper opens fire, 7 shots at IDF vehicle near Rosh Hanikra, on Israel’s northern border, killing 1 Israeli soldier.

An IDF soldier was killed on Sunday evening after being hit by sniper fire near Israel’s northern border with Lebanon.

The attack took place near Rosh Hanikra, in northwestern Israel, and was perpetrated by a soldier from the Lebanese army. A military source who spoke with Arutz Sheva said that the Lebanese soldier fired at least seven bullets at an IDF vehicle.

The soldier’s family has been notified.

Israel has filed a complaint with the UN over the incident, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said in a statement. Continue Reading »
