A Sunni Islamist group took credit on Thursday for the car bombing in a Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut which killed at least 20 people.

At least 20 people have been killed by a large explosion in a southern suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut, with at least 212 reported wounded.

Lebanon’s Daily Star reported that the blast took place on the main road between Rwais and Bir al-Abed. The neighborhood is a stronghold of Hezbollah.

A Hezbollah official told the Financial Times last week, “People are not going to accept you living among them and calling them terrorists.”

Gerald Steinberg, a professor of political studies at Bar-Ilan University and the head of the Jerusalem-based NGO Monitor, told The Jerusalem Post on Saturday, “The reports of increased friction in southern Lebanon are not surprising after the European Union belatedly added Hezbollah to the list of terror organizations.”

Lebanese Daily: IDF ‘Blundered into Hizbullah Ambush’

Lebanese newspaper with connections to Hizbullah boasts “Only Hizbullah can make bombs that blow up Israelis.”

Two blasts that wounded four Israeli soldiers on the border with Lebanon were in fact an “ambush” set by Hizbullah, the Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar reported on Thursday.

The explosions hit the patrol on Wednesday when the troops crossed the border into southern Lebanon, parts of which are controlled by the Shiite movement.

“The enemy blundered when they violated the border with Lebanon, and fell into a trap that only the resistance could set,” said the newspaper, which has links to Hizbullah. Continue Reading »

Two Lebanese nationals charged in Nigerian court for plotting attacks against Israeli targets in western African countries say their interrogators were Mossad agents who used sleep deprivation & other harsh techniques in questioning.

 

Two Lebanese nationals charged with plotting terror attacks in western Africa told a court in Nigeria on Monday they were interrogated by Mossad agents, AFP reported.

Lebanese Christian Leader: Hizbullah Fired Rockets on Presidential Palace

Lebanese leader Samir Geagea, blamed Hizbullah for firing two rockets on the presidential palace compound Thursday, saying the terror organization had declared a de facto war on Lebanon.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea hinted on Sunday that Hizbullah is behind two rocket attacks on the Baabda presidential palace area last Thursday. He accused the movement of “declaring war on the state of Lebanon, its people and institutions,” Ya Libnan reported.

EU ban on Hezbollah a nice start, but impact will be minimal

NEWS ANALYSIS: The new regulations are declaratory and will likely have very little effect on the ground. Hezbollah will just say, “Don’t worry, these men are from the political arm.”

 

The decision Monday by Europe’s 28 foreign ministers to put Hezbollah’s military wing on the EU list of terrorist organizations followed months of jostling by member states in the wake of last summer’s killing of five Israelis and a Bulgarian in a bus bombing near the Black Sea resort of Burgas.

Generals report: Hamas & Hezbollah rocket threat outpacing Israel’s defensive capabilities

Lebanese official tells EU not to declare Hezbollah terrorist organization

Germany now leads European efforts to place Hezbollah’s military wing on EU terror blacklist following new evidence on the 2012 suicide bombing that killed 5 Israelis in Bulgaria.

The European Union is reassessing whether to declare Hezbollah’s military wing a terrorist organization, a move it has long avoided despite U.S. pressure.

The move was bolstered by Germany’s policy change after long resisting calls to list Hezbollah for fear it could destabilize Lebanon.

In yet another sign of the simmering tension in Lebanon, a veteran opposition activist and politician, Saleh el-Machnouk, declared that his country was “under occupation” – not by Israel, but by Hezbullah.

Lebanese Energy Minister Gebran Bassil called for an urgent parliamentary session over the weekend to discuss the Israeli “threat” on his country’s natural gas reserves.

Bassil was referring to reports in Israel about the discovery of the Karish (“Shark”) gas field off the shores of the northern city of Nahariya.

The minister presented reporters with a map and stated that Israel could “theoretically” place a gas pipe and pull the gas “located 4 kilometers (2.5 miles)” from Lebanon‘s natural gas wells, thanks to its advanced technological abilities. Continue Reading »

4 Lebanese citizens receive U.S. sanctions for helping Hezbollah in West Africa

The United States imposed sanctions on four Lebanese citizens on Tuesday, accusing them of fundraising and recruiting for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in West Africa.

The U.S. Treasury Department said the four men were sanctioned for effectively acting as “ambassadors” for Hezbollah, which Washington considers a terrorist group. They were acting in Sierra Leone, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire and the Gambia, it said.

Lebanon pissed-off: Israeli warplanes flying over Beirut

Lebanese official confirmed the IAF overflights on Sunday & said they presence were among the most intense recently.

Israel has no comment.

 

Lebanese security officials and the state-run news agency reported Sunday that low-flying Israeli warplanes were violating its air space, overlying territory including the capital Beirut.

The warplanes flew over southern Lebanon, Beirut, the eastern Bekaa Valley and the city of Baalbek, the National News Agency said.
