MK Porush: Israel Won’t be a Home for All Jews If Gov’t Forces IDF Enlistment

If hareidi-religious Jews are forced to enlist in the IDF, many Jews will no longer see Israel as their home, MK Meir Porush (Yahadut Hatorah) has warned.

Porush met recently with French Ambassador to Israel Cristophe Bigot. During the meeting, Bigot asked Porush what the hareidi-religious community in Israel thinks of the government’s plan to require more hareidi men to enlist in the army.

World’s Oldest Complete Torah Scroll Discovered in Italy

The University of Bologna reports that an 850-year-old Jewish Scroll, written in the Babylonian tradition, had been mislabeled by a librarian in 1889.

An Italian university has found what it claims to be the oldest complete Torah scroll known to exist, the BBC reported on Tuesday.

The scroll, which was found at the library of the University of Bologna, was believed to be no more than a few hundred years old, the report said. But recent carbon dating tests suggest it was written some 850 years ago, making it the oldest complete Torah ever found, Mauro Perani, the university’s Hebrew professor said. Continue Reading »

Torah Written by More Than 200,000 Jews Dedicated at the Kotel

The new Sefer Torah, written by over 200 thousand Jews during the past 7 years, was dedicated at the Western Wall.

A new Sefer Torah (Torah scroll) was dedicated at the Western Wall in Jerusalem this past Tuesday, which was Rosh Chodesh Nissan.

Arutz Sheva attended the dedication ceremony of the unique scroll, which was written by over 200 thousand people from all continents over a seven-year period. The project began in 2006, during the Second Lebanon War, and over 100 thousand soldiers wrote letters for the scroll as well.

The project was led by Igor Kolomoisky, President of the European Jewish Union (EJU), Vadim Rabinovich, Co-chair of the European Jewish Parliament (EJP) and Head of All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress, Genadiy Bogolubov, businessmen, and Alexandr Levin,  President of the World Congress of Russian speaking Jewry. NYPD Recover Stolen Brooklyn Torah Valued at $30,000

A Brooklyn Torah that was reported to be in the trunk of a stolen car, and is estimated to be worth around $30,000 was found, according to NYPD officials.

A Torah that was reported to be stolen and estimated to be worth around $30,000 was found, according to officials.

The Brooklyn Torah, belonging to Rabbi Binyamin Tamaiev of Congregation Agudath Sholom of Flatbush, was reportedly found inside the rabbi’s stolen car.

His gray 2007 Toyota Corolla was stolen from the 3700 block of 18th Avenue on Saturday evening with the rabbi’s personal belongings as well as the $30,000 Torah, police said. Continue Reading »

Kibbutz Givat Brenner, the largest kibbutz in Israel and one of the most secular, completed the first step in a “revolution” Tuesday night with the dedication of a new Torah scroll that kibbutz members paid for from their own pockets.

Spiritual Enrichment Activity: Dimona facility now houses a synagogue

Israelis will celebrate the Simchat Torah holiday next week, but before this another large Torah-related celebration will take place in the most clandestine place in Israel — the nuclear reactor in Dimona.

A limited number of specially invited guests are slated to attend the special ceremony on Tuesday to inaugurate a new synagogue at the site, including a Torah scroll, the first ever at the nuclear reactor.

The Dimona facility now features a synagogue.
