US to provide Cairo with 10 Apache helicopters

 

 

Egypt’s foreign minister Nabil Fahmy was traveling to the United States on Wednesday, his ministry said, a day after Washington decided to provide Cairo with 10 Apache military helicopters.

Washington had imposed a temporary freeze on the delivery of major weapons to Egypt, including the Apaches, following the military-installed authorities’ brutal crackdown on supporters of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi since his ouster last July.

Fahmy is expected to meet officials in Washington and UN chief Ban Ki-moon during his visit.

In response to Egyptian intel assessment that Gaza militants are responsible for some attacks in Sinai, Egyptian reconnaissance planes have identified potential hostile targets in Palestinian coastal territory, security official tells Ma’an.

The Egyptian army has planned military attacks on specific targets in the Gaza Strip in the event that the security situation in the northern Sinai peninsula deteriorates, a senior Egyptian security official told the Ma’an news agency.

30 militant jihadist hurt in Egyptian air assault in Sinai

 

In the largest Sinai operation since the Yom Kippur War of 1973, Egyptian military bombs 12 targets in northern Sinai where jihadists were holed up and six Gaza smuggling tunnels also hit.

At least 31 people were killed or injured on Saturday when the Egyptian army mounted a large operation against militants in North Sinai, security officials said.

Cairo moves added troops to border with Gaza to ‘clean’ area of Islamists

A military official says Egypt is deploying new troops backed by tanks and other armored vehicles to insurgent strongholds in the northern Sinai Peninsula.

He says the army will “clean” areas around the towns of Rafah and Sheikh Zuweyid on the border with the Gaza Strip and two nearby villages, al-Qurea and al-Dhahir, where Islamic militants operate. Continue Reading »

With the agreement of Israel, Egypt has increased its military presence in Sinai in order to fight the terrorist presence in the region, including an AH-64-D Apache helicopter to be deployed in the eastern Sinai Peninsula.
