Palestinian High Court suspends next month’s municipal elections

PA officials as well as Hamas officials in Gaza have thwarted the opposition in local courts, or simply arrested candidates, but now Palestinian High Court postponed elections for 416 locales on October 8, until an undetermined date.

 

The Palestinian High Court of Justice in Ramallah ordered on Thursday the suspension of the Palestinian municipal elections in the West Bank and Gaza until an undetermined date, putting the future of the long awaited elections in jeopardy

The elections were supposed to take place in 416 locales on October 8.

The High Court’s decision comes in response to a petition submitted by a Palestinian lawyer, Nael al-Houh, calling for the elections’ suspension due to—the illegitimacy of the judicial and security institutions in Gaza and the exclusion of many Jerusalem municipalities from the elections, according to Maan, a Palestinian news site. While Israel’s leadership is busy exhausting itself arguing over Hamas’s tunnel digging in Gaza in 2014, they are missing—or perhaps ignoring—a major threat the terror organization is preparing in the West Bank. This political threat, which very well might pose obstacles to Israel’s operations in the West Bank, can’t be destroyed using technological measures.

Fortunately, the process to request an absentee ballot is relatively quick and easy.

Abbas: I expect Israel to accept upcoming Palestinian election results

 

Abbas’ comment comes as IDF soldiers order Palestinian newspaper to stop printing material by outlawed terrorist organization Hamas.

Erekat defends Hamas’ right to run in Palestinian elections

In interview on Army Radio, chief PLO negotiator says of Palestinian elections, “we use ballots not bullets…everyone has a right to run.”

“Hamas and Fatah have differences in opinion,” Chief PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat said Sunday morning, but stressed that “everyone has a right to run.”

“We are a democracy” he told Army Radio, emphasizing that “whoever wins, wins.” This does not mean that Hamas would be “taking over” the West Bank, however, adding, “We don’t use bullets, we use ballots.”
When probed over whether Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal is expected to run in the Palestinian presidential elections, Erekat said he has not announced a decision.

NGO claims El Al prevents its flight attendants from voting

The NGO, Movement of Quality Government complains to Election Panel that Israeli El Al workers were given shifts on Election Day that prevents them from voting.

 

Many El Al flight attendants will not be able to exercise their right to vote, according to a complaint submitted by the Movement for Quality Government to the Central Election Committee on Thursday.

Some flight attendants will leave the country before the polls open on January 22 and return the next day.

The Movement for Quality Government wrote that some of the flight attendants requested not to work that day, but were rebuffed.

Dramatic development: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman have met to convene a special press conference on Thursday evening in which they declared that they have negotiated to unite the Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu under one ticket ahead of the upcoming elections.

The dramatic decision was made after secret negotiations between the two men with senior officials from both parties left out of the loop.
