Jordanian parliament demands Israeli ambassador expelled

Jordan’s MPs on Wednesday unanimously demanded the government expel Israeli Ambassador Daniel Nevo over “the occupation measures” at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, state media reported.

The measure cannot be implemented without King Abdullah‘s approval.

The Jordanian MPs called the decision “historic” and claimed the government must implement it.

The non-binding vote came after Israel limited the entrance of Muslim worshipers to the Temple Mount on Tuesday and allowed Jews to visit the compound on the occasion of Jerusalem Day, which continued into Wednesday. Continue Reading »

French Report: Israel & Jordan working to stop Syrian WMD transfers

Jordan has apparently given Israel permission to enter its airspace to access Syria in order to monitor & possibly act against the movement of chemical weapons

In a demonstration of regional cooperation against shared threats, Jordan this week gave the green light for Israeli drones to use its airspace to enter neighboring Syria in order to monitor the use and movement of chemical weapons.

A group of Israeli tourists in Jordan have been stuck there since Wednesday, and are not allowed to leave their lodgings, because the Jordanian police officer assigned to the group has gone missing.

The group of 21 Israelis left for Jordan last Sunday on a tour of the country’s northern hills. They had been set to return to Israel on Wednesday night via the Hussein Bridge, over the Jordan River. Continue Reading »

WASHINGTON – Relations between Jordan’s King Abdullah and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have tightened and are “very strong,” the monarch said on Monday. In an interview with The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, King Abdullah II said, “Our discussions have really improved.” According to reports, the two met late last month.

World Bank Study: Red-Dead pipeline is feasible project

Project connecting the Red Sea to the Dead Sea would be an environmental disaster, according to green activists.

 

While there may be environmental and social impacts on the region, a trilateral plan to construct a 180-kilometer pipeline transporting water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea is feasible, a World Bank study has determined.

Published as part of a series of studies, the World Bank printed the report alongside an environmental and social assessment study and a study of strategic alternatives, as well as various other studies and models of the Dead and Red seas – all done simultaneously, but conducted by different companies. Just confirmed on Israel Channel 2 that Israel’s PM Netanyahu traveled to Jordan for secret talks with King Abdullah II on Syrian chemical weapons facilities.

 

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a secret meeting in Jordan with King Abdullah II, the London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported on Wednesday.

The Jordanian Tourism Ministry on Wednesday warned Jewish and Israeli tourists not to openly wear religious garb or perform religious rituals while visiting the country.

Jordanian tourism officials reportedly informed their Israeli counterparts to advise visitors not to wear “Jewish dress” or perform “religious rituals in public places” so as to prevent possible attacks.

Earlier this year, six Israeli tourists wearing kippot, or yarmulkes, were assaulted in a marketplace in southern Jordan, after their traditional Jewish garb “provoked the sensibilities of the vendors,” independent daily Al-Arab Al-Yawm reported. Continue Reading »

Report: Jordan says ‘No’ to Israel’s request to Bomb Syrian WMDs

The Atlantic reports: Israel asked for Jordan’s approval to bomb Syria’s chemical weapons caches.  Reportedly, Jordan said ‘no’.

Israel has consulted with Jordan twice over the issue of Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal, according to a report published Monday by The Atlantic, both times with plans to take out multiple sites. According to intelligence officials in two countries quoted by correspondent Jeff Goldberg, “Israel has been seeking Jordan’s ‘permission’ to bomb these sites, but the Jordanians have so far declined” to agree.

As Goldberg pointed out, Israel does not need Jordan’s approval to bomb an arsenal that could prove to be an existential threat to its citizens. Continue Reading »

In recent weeks, people have demonstrated in southern and northern villages for not receiving water for the past two months, burning tyres, blocking roads and seizing a Water Authority tanker.

The Jordanian Obeidat tribe on Monday condemned the appointment of tribe member Walid Khalid Obeidat as Jordan‘s new ambassador to Israel, saying that a person who accepts such an appointment is “violating all prohibitions, crossing all red lines and offending the nation and the tribe.”

King Abdullah II on Wednesday accused Israel of disrupting Jordan’s nuclear program which is aimed at meeting its dire energy needs and powering water desalination plants, in an exclusive interview with AFP.

“Strong opposition to Jordan’s nuclear energy program is coming from Israel,” the king said.

“When we started going down the road of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, we approached some highly responsible countries to work with us. And pretty soon we realized that Israel was putting pressure on those countries to disrupt any cooperation with us.” Continue Reading »
