Nasrallah says Assad can’t be defeated

Shi’ite militant leader of Hezbollah says those who think the Syrian rebels can win are “very very very mistaken.”

BEIRUT – Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Lebanese Shi’ite militant movement Hezbollah, said on Sunday the rebels in Syria could not emerge victorious from the 21-month-long uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Nasrallah, a staunch ally of Assad, said: “The situation in Syria is getting more complicated (but) anyone who thinks the armed opposition can settle the situation on the ground is very very very mistaken.” Syrian rebels accuse the Shi’ite Muslim group of sending fighters to neighboring Syria to help Assad overcome the largely Sunni Muslim revolt.

He focused in particular on Jordan. According to interviews he conducted, last month Jordanian security forces arrested 11 men and thus foiled a massive planned terrorist attack in the heart of Amman.

Against the backdrop of Syria’s ongoing war between Bashar Assad‘s loyalists and rebel forces, academic institutions in Syria have seen a drop in the number of Druze applicants. Up until last year, some 200 students applied to Syrian universities annually, but this year, Syrian academies said that only 58 Israel-based Druze students, a Syrian source reported.

IDF Jeep Hit AGAIN by Rebel Gunfire from Syria

Rebel gunfire from Syria hits IDF for third jeep, Israel complains to UN.

An IDF jeep patrolling the northern border was hit by gunfire from Syria on Tuesday. The incident occurred in the Ramat Golan region.

The jeep was damaged, but soldiers were not hurt. The soldiers did not return fire despite new rules of engagement in the area.

IDF commanders believe the shots were not aimed at Israel, but rather, were stray shots from fighting in Syria. Fighting has approached the border in recent weeks. Two misfired shells have hit the Golan region as well; after one such incident Israel fired warning shots over the border. Continue Reading »

Mustafa al-Sheikh, the head of the Free Syrian Army‘s military council commented on recent tensions on the Golan Heights and said that “Israelis aiding the Syrian regime and its allies in accordance with their partnership.”

A mortar shell from Syria landed in the Golan Heights Monday, prompting the IDF to return fire for the second time in two days, the first time it has fired into Syria territory since the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

The exchange came just hours after an appeal for restraint from all sides by UN chief Ban Ki-moon.

A report by Turkey’s Anadolu news Agency quoted a statement issued by the FSA saying that Israel’s rocket fire at Syria on Sunday afternoon was aimed to help the Assad regime in his war against opposition forces.

Syrian Rebels Take More Hizbullah Hostages

Once again, Hizbullah terrorists taken hostage in Syria, by Free Syrian Army fighters.

Syrian rebels say they have detained 13 Hizbullah members and are holding them in a village outside of Homs. Free Syrian Army fighters are also threatening to invade Homs, according to a source. The FSA is protesting Hizbullah’s support for the regime of Bashar Assad.

One source quoted in the foreign press said “They [Hizbullah detainees] have confessed to killing and slaughtering [people] in Syria…”

The source insists that Hizbullah is “deeply involved” in the Syria fighting, and the fate of the 13 hostages was “in the hands of [FSA] field commanders.” Continue Reading »

Over the past few weeks more than 3,000 Iranian snipers have arrived in Damascus to aid the forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad, Al-Arabiya reported, citing a leader of one of the rebel groups operating in the civil war-torn country.

President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government, U.S. sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.

The sources said that Obama’s order, approved earlier this year and known as an intelligence “finding,” broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the rebels oust Assad.

Precisely when Obama signed the secret intelligence authorization, an action not previously reported, could not be determined and the full extent of clandestine support that agencies like the CIA might be providing also is unclear, Reuters reported. Continue Reading »

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi says the country’s chemical weapons stocks are secure and would only be used in the case of a foreign attack.

There has been widespread concern that Syria‘s stocks of chemical weapons could fall into the hands of the rebels fighting the government, some of whom are believed to have links to al-Qaeda. There was also concern the weapons might be used to defend the regime.

Makdissi said in a news conference Monday broadcast on state television that the weapons are under the protection of the Syrian army and would never be used “inside Syria.” Continue Reading »
