An Israeli army delegation departed for Brazil on Sunday morning to assist in search and rescue efforts following the collapse of a disused dam that killed at least 34 people and left hundreds missing.

Brazil kept promise to support Israel at United Nations

The symbolic victory against Hamas at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, in which 87 nations supported a draft resolution condemning Hamas, marked another milestone: Brazil took an unprecedented step by siding with Israel and the U.S.

PLO condemns Brazilian President-elect over embassy relocation to Jerusalem

Senior PLO official Hanan Ashrawi warns Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro over his vow to maintain his campaign-promise to relocate Brazil’s embassy to Jerusalem as, “provocative and illegal.”

Senior Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Hanan Ashrawi on Friday condemned Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro’s announcement that he would move his country’s Israel embassy to Jerusalem.

“These are provocative and illegal steps that will only destabilize security and stability in the region,” Ashrawi, a member of the PLO executive committee, told AFP.

“It is very unfortunate that Brazil has joined this negative alliance against international law,” she said, referring to a small number of countries supporting the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move its embassy there. Continue Reading »

Israel’s pavilion showcases 18 ‘Blue & White’ companies at Brazil defense exhibition

Israel Military Industries are marketing their Guided Mortar Munition, battle tested by the IDF, are guided by laser or GPS satellite systems, and has a range of 8 kilometers.

 

Israel Military Industries (IMI) will display its new Guided Mortar Munition – which are already in service in the IDF – at an international defense exhibition in Brazil this week.

The mortars can be guided by laser or GPS.

The LAAD Defense and Security exhibition will take place from April 14 to 17 in Rio De Janerio, and will see IMI showcase the guided mortars, developed in response to operational requirements from the IDF and foreign military customers, IMI said. Continue Reading »

500-year-old Jewish Skeleton Found in First Known Synagogue of the New World

Brazilian archaeologists unearthed what they said are the 500-year-old remains of a Jewish man in Recife.

A report Thursday in the online edition of the Rio de Janeiro-based O Globo described the discovery earlier this month as a perfectly-preserved skeleton of a male adult. The skeleton was found during earthwork in Recife in northern Brazil, where Portuguese Jews in 1636 built the first known synagogue in the New World.

Marcos Albuquerque of the Federal University of Pernambuco, who oversaw the dig around the skeleton, told O Globo he had no doubt the man was Jewish and that he was buried sometime in the 16th century.
