Saudi Arabia has informed Israel in recent weeks that it will shoot down any Israeli planes that fly over its airspace on their way to or from Iran. A report in Yediot Achronot Thursday said that the Saudis have made it known that they will not allow their airspace to be used for any attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities by Israel, the U.S., or any other country.

What is it? According to foreign reports, the IDF uses armed unmanned aerial vehicles to attack targets in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

Lockheed Martin & US reach deal on F-35 fighter jets for Israel

This marks a big step forward for Israel’s $2.75 billion agreement to buy 19 F-35 jets, which was signed in October 2010 and includes options for up to 75 of the radar-evading fighters.

The Pentagon has reached an agreement with Lockheed Martin Corp on a $450 million program to enhance electronic warfare equipment on the F-35 fighter jet, and integrate Israeli-unique systems beginning in 2016, sources, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

The strike came after two rockets were fired into Southern Israel from Gaza earlier in the day landing in the Eshkol Regional Council area. More than 130 rockets have been fired into the South from Gaza since Monday, but Thursday and Friday were relatively quiet after an Egyptian-brokered informal ceasfire seemed to be largely holding. The rocket fire from Gaza continued early morning Wednesday with a Grad rocket landing near Be’er Sheva and more than ten rockets landing in the Eshkol Regional Council. Two of the rockets landed inside towns but caused no casualties, though light damage was caused to an industrial structure.

IAF aircraft struck a terror target in northern Gaza early Wednesday morning, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit announced in a statement.

The statement said direct hits were identified and all aircraft returned safely to their bases.

Palestinian sources claimed that the IAF strike killed two additional Palestinians in Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza, bringing the total number of dead killed in air strikes on Monday to four. The IDF Spokesman’s Office stated that the airstrike targeted terrorists in the midst of firing a rocket at Israeli civilians.

An IAF Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) fired at a squad of terrorist snipers in northern Gaza Monday. The squad was one of the terror cells that have been firing at Israelis in the past few days. On Sunday, the snipers fired at a farmer and later at an IDF force.

‘Hezbollah may move Syrian arms to Lebanon’

Israel expresses concern after reports state Assad may be losing control over military assets, including air defense base.

 

 

Concern is mounting inIsrael over the possibility that Hezbollah will try to move sophisticated weaponry, including Scud missiles, from Syria to Lebanon to protect them in the event of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s downfall.

The concern stems from reports that Assad might be losing control over certain military capabilities including an air defense base which was captured by rebels earlier this week.

 

 

Syria is believed to have allocated a number of Scud D missiles – the most advanced missile in its arsenal – to Hezbollah already in 2010 but they have been stored in bases in Syria.

With New Cameras, IAF Could Peek into the Ground

Hyperspectral camera could allow UAVs to detect hidden weapons and chemical agents.

The Israel Air Force is currently examining hyper-spectral camera technology, which could allow unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to collect a wide variety of information, some invisible to the human eye, the IAF Website writes. Among other things, the camera could identify hidden weapons and underground bunkers camouflaged with vegetation.

“The camera will alert its operator regarding the location of suspicious targets and even of spots that are saturated with chemicals and other substances,” Lt. Col. Yoav, chief of the Intelligence Department of the IAF’s Equipment Squadron, told the website. Continue Reading »

IDF continues to look for second JSF squadron

The decision to move forward comes despite reports of possible delays and rising costs.

The IDF plans to approve the procurement of a second squadron of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters at a meeting of the General Staff later this month which will convene to finalize the military’s future multi-year program.

Called Oz (Hebrew for Strength), the new multi-year program is scheduled to go into effect towards the end of the year. Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz will oversee deliberations on the program over the next few weeks and will bring the final plan to the government for approval.
