After upward of 350 anthropologists from around the world have endorsed a boycott of Israel and its academic institutions, some 1,200 academics signed a pro-Israeli petition calling to oppose such measures.

“We, the undersigned academics, (faculty, full time and part time, academic staff including librarians, researchers, post doctorates, technicians and technologists, administrators, and trustees) vigorously support free speech and free debate but we oppose faculty or student boycotts of Israel’s academic institutions, scholars and students,” reads the petition, posted on the website of the Faculty for Academic Freedom. Anti-Israel Propaganda Delays South Africa’s Approval of Israeli Circumcision Device

The African National Congress and the Congress of South African Trade Unions, both supporters of the Boycott Divest Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel are boycotting the device since 2013.

The South African Department of Health reportedly is delaying approval of an Israeli-made circumcision device after political pressure from anti-Israel trade unions.

Prepex, a nonsurgical circumcising device developed in Israel, was approved last year by the World Health Organization. Studies show it reduces the likelihood of contracting the virus that causes AIDS by nearly 60 percent.

The boycott of the device began in 2013 by the Congress of South African Trade Unions, or Cosatu, and the African National Congress, both supporters of the Boycott Divest Sanctions campaign against Israel.

Lawyer Attacks Hypocrisy of Presbyterian Divestment While Enjoying Israel Tax Benefits

The Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA) voted last month to divest from companies that supply equipment to Israel. The decision means pulling church investments in Caterpillar, Motorola and HP to the tune of $21 million.

But, as it turns out, this very same church and its related organizations receives benefits and tax breaks from Israel totaling millions of dollars, and presumably would be none too pleased to lose those perks.

Britain’s largest union adopts 2 boycott Israel resolutions, despite Labor’s calls to reject

The trade union, which claims a national membership of about 1.3 million, easily passed 2 pro-Palestinian resolutions.

LONDON – UNITE, Britain’s largest Trades Union – which last week confirmed it will be financially backing Labor Party leader Ed Miliband’s bid for the premiership next May – has defied his recent call to not support the Boycott, Sanctions, and Divestment campaign against Israel.

Noam Chomsky says BDS boycott of Israel risks harming Palestinian cause

Noam Chomsky, the American academic & pro-Palestinian activist claims that the ‘South Africa-apartheid-Israel’ analogy is erroneous.

 

The campaign calling to boycott Israel in an effort to change its policies toward the Palestinians risks backfiring because of limited support, leading American academic and political activist Noam Chomsky has said.

In an article posted in The Nation on Wednesday, Chomsky targets the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. He says that while there is international support exists for two of the movement’s main goals – ending the occupation of territories captured in the 1967 war and granting equal rights to Arab citizens of Israel, there is no significant support for its third objective – allowing Palestinian refugees to return to their homes in Israel.

Fully 11 percent of all global hi-tech investments every year go to Israel. That’s a huge figure considering Israel’s minuscule size.

Desmond Tutu asks U.S. Christians to recognize Israel as apartheid state

At Presbyterian Church meeting in Detroit, veteran anti-Israel campaigner Desmond Tutu seeks to pass series of divestment resolutions.

 

Veteran anti-apartheid activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu has called on the Presbyterian Church (USA) to pass a series of resolutions condemning Israel as an apartheid state and proposing policies to boycott it.

The church’s biennial General Assembly, which is currently meeting in Detroit, has on its agenda eight resolutions dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Activists want the church and its institutions to use their investment dollars to punish Israel over its treatment of the Palestinians, such as by withdrawing investments from companies whose products are used by the Israeli government in the Palestinian territories.

University of Michigan votes down BDS, but Chicago’s Loyola narrowly passes

After a 6-hour meeting, Michigan’s student gov’t votes down Israel divestment. In Chicago, the vote to accept the BDS proposal went smoothly.

An Israel divestment resolution was narrowly passed a second time by the student government of Chicago’s Loyola University, while a similar resolution was defeated at the University of Michigan.

Loyola United Student Government Association first passed a resolution on March 19 calling on the university evening to remove its holdings from eight companies that provide equipment to Israel for use in the West Bank. The vote on a measure proposed by the Loyola chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine passed 26-0 with two abstentions.

UK Minister for Universities & Science: No academic boycotts of Israel in Britain

During his visit to Jerusalem, David Willetts, the British Minister for Universities and Science says fewer Israelis have been coming to study in UK because of misperception of hostility.

 

 

Fewer Israeli students have been coming to England to study because of mistaken perceptions that Britain is “an unfriendly or hostile place” to Israel or Israelis. That mistaken perception needs addressing, said David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science, in a visit to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on Monday.

Israeli persimmons taken into custody from Saudi market

 

Arab League’s total boycott of Israel was put into place back in 1948, although its enforcement varies from country to country.

 

Saudi authorities seized 140 kilos of persimmons from Israel at a local market near the border with Jordan, local media reported.

The fruit had Israeli stickers on it and was found in the city of Qurayyat, in northern Saudi Arabia.

Cruise ship captain acquiesced: Israelis barred from entering Tunis

 

Non-Israeli Jewish passenger were allowed to disembark and that the ship personnel kept it all a secret.

 

Israeli tourists aboard a Norwegian cruise ship were barred from disembarking in the Port of Tunis Sunday. They were forced to remain on the “Norwegian Jade”, while non-Israeli Jewish passengers were allowed off.

A Jewish Canadian passenger on the ship who preferred to remain nameless told Haaretz that there were approximately 20 Israelis on the ship and that at first, no one knew they were denied entry because “the ship kept it a secret.”

Norway’s Young Men and Women’s Christian Association aligned itself with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel, or BDS.

The Norwegian YMCA-YWCA “encourages broad economic boycott of goods and services from Israel and Israeli settlements to pressure the Israeli government to follow up on U.N. resolutions and end the illegal occupation of Palestine,” the organization wrote in a statement published on its Norwegian-language website last week.

Even as activists worldwide purportedly working on behalf of the “Palestinian cause” push for a boycott of Israeli products, the Palestinian Arabs themselves are increasingly buying “blue & white.”

Initially, members of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement were upset that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas would not officially endorse their efforts to put Israel in an economic stranglehold.

But a recent survey by the Palestinian Authority’s Consumer Protection Authority revealed the possible reason for Abbas’ reluctance: the Palestinian Arabs are major consumers of Israeli products. Continue Reading »
