NATO Agrees to Turkey’s request of Patriot Deployment

NATO approves Turkey’s request to deploy US-made Patriot missiles along their border with Syria.

NATO on Tuesday agreed to deploy Patriot missiles along the border of member state Turkey as requested by Ankara to help it defend its territory against threats from Syria, AFP reports.

“NATO has agreed to augment Turkey’s air defense capabilities in order to defend the population and territory of Turkey and to contribute to the de-escalation of the crisis along the alliance’s border,” a statement quoted by AFP said.

Hamas leader Mashaal plans to visit Gaza with Turkey’s Erdogan next week

Turkish PM says Hamas leader invited him to visit Gaza visit after previously planned trips were cancelled.

Egypt also gives preliminary approval for Iranian Foreign Minister to visit Gaza.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that he plans to visit Gaza next week, Turkish paper Today’s Zaman reported.

Erdogan said he was invited to join Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal’s visit to Gaza on December 5, Today’s Zaman reported.

The Turkish prime minister has expressed willingness to visit Gaza several times in the past. Earlier this month, Erdogan told reporters he plans to visit Gaza soon, and that Turkish officials are conducting talks with officials in the Strip in order to make the trip happen, according to Today’s Zaman.

Iran, Syria and Russia Object Placement of NATO Missiles on Turkish-Syrian Border

Moscow, a heavy benefactor of Damascus joined Iran in opposing the deployment of the NATO Patriot missile battery,  which called the Turkish request “provocative.”

Iran is doing everything it can to fight the placement of Patriot defense missiles along the Turkish-Syrian border. So is Syria, Iran’s beneficiary, backed by Russia, its other benefactor.

Turkey, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has requested deployment of the Patriot anti-missile defense system. Ankara has been looking for ways to beef up defenses along Turkey’s 900-kilometer (560-mile) border with Syria.

Some 33 relatives of the Turkish activists, who were killed in an Israeli raid on the Mavi Marmara flotilla to Gaza in 2010, have filed a lawsuit against Israel seeking compensation for their losses, Hürriyet Daily Newspaper reported Saturday.

Erdogan: Turkey’s not seeking war with Syria

Prime Minister  Erdogan says Turkey wants peace, shortly after the parliament authorized military operations against Syria.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that his country does not want war with Syria but that it is determined to protect its borders and people.

Erdogan was speaking at a news conference held hours after Turkey’s parliament approved a bill authorizing military operations against Syria.

Earlier Thursday, Turkey fired on targets in Syria for a second day following a Syrian shelling that killed five civilians in a Turkish border town.

International hacking organization Anonymous crashed websites belonging to the Turkish police and intelligence Thursday in a show of support for the socialist RedHack group, Hurriyet daily news reported.

The website www.egm.gov.tr, which belongs to the Turkish Police Directorate, was rendered inaccessible, while the website of Turkey’s National Intelligence Agency (MİT), www.mit.gov.tr, could be accessed but subpages could not load.

RedHack announced on its Twitter account that Anonymous had taken down the websites to support the socialist group, which was identified as a terrorist organization by authorities after it hacked into the Turkish Foreign Ministry servers, revealing the identities of foreign diplomatic personnel working in Turkey. The head of the Turkish organization that sponsored the 2010 flotilla to the Gaza Strip is being investigated for allegedly financing al-Qaida through his organization, the Turkish daily Haberturk reported on Friday.

Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) President Bulent Yildirim is being investigated by a specially authorized prosecutor in Istanbul over allegations of “providing financial aid to al-Qaida via his foundation” in absolute secrecy, without official numbering and identification, Haberturk reported.
