Egypt and Iran are locked in a power struggle over their influence and conflicting aims in the Gaza Strip, and Egypt appears to have the upper hand.

While Tehran is dissatisfied with the relative durability of the cease-fire between Hamas and Israel, and is pushing Palestinian armed factions to violate the truce, Cairo is doing its utmost to reinforce the calm, which it views as serving Egypt’s national interest.

Hamas jail 6 Islamist extremists in Gaza

The statement by the Hamas gov’t in Gaza comes days after an IAF airstrike killed a Salafi who was responsible for recent rocket attack on southern Israel from Gaza and the Sinai.

 

The Gaza Strip’s Hamas government says it has arrested six militant extremists it says is suspected of stealing weapons and plotting attacks.

Wadi Kelt: Shots fired at hikers’ car

 

PA man scares off hikers in Wadi Kelt, near Mitzpeh Yericho, bullets shot at fleeing car, security forces searching the area.

Shots were fired Thursday at a group of hikers near Mitzpe Yericho in Binyamin. IDF and police troops arrived at the area and started scouring for perpetrators.

According to initial investigation, the hikers rushed to their car once they noticed a man approaching them and acting suspiciously. As soon as they started driving away, shots were fired at the car.

PA Arab open fire on Jewish woman & tourist

Arab man shoots at two people in Wadi Kelt, none hurt. IDF investigating

A terrorist opened fire at two people on Thursday evening in Wadi Kelt, near Mitzpeh Yericho. The two were attacked as they sat in a car.

The two people targeted, an Israeli woman from Mevaseret Tzion and a European tourist, were not hurt.

The two told police that they had been touring the area when they noticed an Arab man nearby acting suspiciously. When they returned to their car, he attempted to shoot them.

The IDF is investigating the incident. A unit pursued the shooter, who apparently fled to the wadi. Continue Reading »

Gaza rocket shot at Israel continues

Rocket or mortar shell launched from Hamas controlled Gaza falls into Eshkol Regional Council; no injuries or damage reported.

Western Negev suffered another in a series of shootings Thursday as a rocket or mortar shell was launched from the Gaza Strip and exploded in an open area at the Eshkol Regional Council.

No injuries or damage were reported. There was no red alert siren sounded in the area prior to the explosion.

The IDF killed a senior terrorist in north Gaza Tuesday for the first time since Operation Pillar of Defense .

The Air Defense Command branch of the Israel Air Force held a day-long demonstration of its modern capabilities last week in the southern Negev region.

The event was a commemoration of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, during which the command, then known as the Anti-Aircraft Command, played a major role.

As the military forces of Syria and Egypt pressed their early advantage thanks to a successful surprise attack on the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, the Anti-Aircraft Command managed to down 54 enemy aircraft, allowing the reeling Israeli forces time to recover and regroup for a crushing counter-offensive. Hamas tightened Gaza security with its Kassam Brigade to stop rocket fire

‘Asharq Al-Awsat’ reports Hamas deployed Kassam Brigade fighters to border, replacing local police in areas previously used for rocket launching at Israel.

Hamas has replaced policemen at the Gaza Strip border areas with fighters from its Kassam Brigades in an effort to stop rocket fire at southern Israel, the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Wednesday.

The paper quotes a Palestinian source as saying that Israel passed messages to Hamas through Egyptian mediators threatening to launch another large-scale operation in the Gaza Strip if the rocket fire doesn’t stop.Hamas’s Kassam Brigades have set up fixed and mobile roadblocks and have begun searching cars in areas near the border.
