DETROIT – A federal judge refused Thursday to dismiss charges against an Arab activist accused of failing to tell US immigration officials in Michigan that she’d been convicted in a fatal terrorist bombing in Jerusalem.

An online petition protesting the university of Georgia’s decision to hold its homecoming football game on Yom Kippur has acquired some 2,000 signatures.

The petition decrying the scheduling conflict was addressed to the university president.

Georgia is playing Vanderbilt in a Southeastern Conference game on Saturday that is scheduled to start at 4 p.m, several hours before the end of Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

Vatican pledges $125,000 for Auschwitz preservation & upkeep

 

The Vatican’s Secretary of State says, “Given our limited resources, the amount is small, but it is an expression of our full support.”
• More than 100 million euros from 31 countries was pledged to Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation for the preservation & upkeep of former Nazi death camp.

The Vatican has pledged a 100,000 euro ($125,000) donation to the preservation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum, located at the former Nazi death camp in southern Poland.

U.S. State Dept condemns Abbas’ UNGA speech as ‘provocative’

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Psaki blasted Abbas’ provocative statements as ‘counterproductive & undermine efforts to create a positive atmosphere and restore trust between the parties.’

 

U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki issued a short statement criticizing the speech given by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the UNGA on Friday, in which he accused Israel of conducting a “war of genocide” during the recent round of fighting in Gaza.

The brief altercation occurred after Abbas was allowed to enter the UN General Assembly chamber through the front door, while his security staff – as per UN protocol – were not. After some pushing and shoving, Abbas’s security staff were directed to another entrance.

Israel is increasing its assistance effort to help combat Ebola in Africa, Israel media reported Sunday.

DPA – The Austrian government plans a bill to create a standardized German-language version of the Koran, in order to prevent extremists from misusing the holy Muslim text, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said Saturday.

The bill was needed because Austrians should know the Koran’s content, said Kurz. Additionally, he argued mainstream Muslims are suffering because terrorists and their sympathizers are acting upon incorrect interpretations, said the minister, who is also responsible for integration policy.
