U.S. officials recently warned Israel that Egypt and Jordan could annul their peace treaties with the Jewish State if it carries out a preemptive strike against Iran, AFP reported on Thursday based on a report in the Yediot Achronot daily newspaper.

IDF intercepts $2.5M Egyptian drug smuggling attempt

IDF troops discover 700 kilograms of hashish on Egyptian border, making this the biggest drug smuggling bust in 2012

IDF troops on Saturday uncovered some 700 kilograms of hashish near the IsraelEgypt border, making what was deemed to be the biggest drug smuggling bust this year.

The drugs, worth over $2.5 million, were divided into 28 packages and placed inside two off-road vehicles, which were deserted in the Ezuz region. The authorities were looking into the possibility that the vehicles were waiting to be picked up by smugglers on the receiving end of the deal. Continue Reading »

At least three people were hurt on Friday as dozens of armed terrorists, affiliated with the Salafi movement of Islam, stormed the international peacekeeping force base in the Sinai Peninsula, near the Gaza-Israel border. They were protesting the controversial film mocking the prophet Mohammed which has resulted in protests throughout the Arab world.

An Israeli-American filmmaker went into hiding Tuesday after his movie, which provides a negative view of Islam and its founder, the Prophet Mohammed, sparked violent protests yesterday against U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya, which resulted in the death of four Americans.

High Holiday services to be held at Alexandria Synagogue

A member of the Jewish community of Alexandria on Monday denied reports that Egyptian authorities had canceled Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur prayers in the city citing security concerns saying he would personally lead the services during the High Holidays.

Berlin rejects idea that Israeli relations hurt by submarine sale to Egypt

Reports in Israeli media suggest that submarine sale to Egypt will damage relations between Jerusalem & Berlin.

The German government rejected Monday press reports that Berlin’s relations with Israel had been hit by possible moves to sell German submarines to Egypt.

“It has not changed in the German attitude to Israel, or the obligation the German government has to ensure Israel’s security,” German government spokesman Steffen Seibert told a regular press briefing.

His comments followed a report in the Israeli media on Sunday, which quoted unnamed government sources in Israel as saying the possible submarine sale had resulted in a “dramatic deterioration in the relationship” between the two countries. Continue Reading »

Egyptian Report: Egypt refuses a US request to inspect Iranian arms shipment to Syria

Egypt has recently turned down a U.S. request to stop an Iranian ship carrying weapons to Syria, according to a report in Egypt’s Al-Ahram newspaper.

Hamas reports Egypt reopens Rafah crossing into Gaza

Hamas spokesman: Egypt informed Gaza gov’t that their border crossing, which has been closed for much of the past month, will be opened permanently.

Egypt has reopened the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Saturday.

The crossing is a lifeline for Gazans, which had been closed for much of the month since an August 5 attack on Egyptian guards, Palestinian and Egyptian security sources said.

The move signals a step forward in relations between Egypt’s new government led by President Mohammed Morsi and Gaza’s Islamist rulers Hamas, which had deteriorated since the attack in which gunmen killed 16 Egyptian soldiers on the Israeli border.

After Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi embraced Iranian President Muhammad Ahmadinejad at the summit of the Organization of Islamic States Saudi Arabia, sources in the office of the Egyptian presidency announced that Morsi was planning to visit Tehran for the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) at the end of August. The NAM grouping of mostly Third World countries was first established in 1961 as a neutral alternative to the West and the Soviet bloc.

Egyptian Defense Minister Abdul Fatah al-Sisi spoke with his Israeli counterpart, Ehud Barak, on the phone Wednesday, and stressed that Cairo is committed to the peace treaty with Israel, according to an Arabic newspaper.

The paper, Al Hayat, which is published in London, cites senior Egyptian sources as saying that there are understandings between Israel and Egypt regarding the means of dealing with the security problems in Sinai.

The White House is offering Egypt increased intel sharing, including satellite imagery & drone flights and intercepts of cellphone & other communications among militants in Sinai •  for the first time since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Egypt is preparing to use aircraft & tanks in Sinai in its offensive against militants there.
