A Jerusalem District Court judge has sentenced an Arab resident of the capital to nine months in prison, in a landmark case over incitement on social media.

Omer Shalbi was convicted for posts he made on Facebook over the past year, in which he expressed sympathy with the terrorists behind the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens last summer, the Har Nof synagogue massacre, and the series of deadly attacks by “lone wolf” terrorists using vehicles and knives to target Israeli civilians and security personnel during that same period. Get “I voted” button on Facebook page during Israeli elections

 

After launching similar initiatives during U. S., India & EU Parliament elections, Facebook will introduce voting button for Israeli users, in bid to help stimulate voter turnout.

Facebook announced Wednesday that it will offer Israeli users a feature which will allow them to share that they voted in the March 17 Knesset elections, and additionally receive information from Israel’s Central Election Committee on the polling station at which they cast their ballot.

The official Facebook page of Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party is marking 50 years since the founding of the Arab nationalist group – and in typical style has posted a graphic image glorifying the murder of Israelis in celebration.

The image posted on the Fatah Party Central Page shows a pile of skulls and bones, topped with a rifle bearing the Fatah flag.

Several of the bloodied skulls are marked with stars of David.

Facebook’s new ‘Safety Check’ tool tells loved ones you’re safe

New function on your Facebook account alerts family & friends back home that you’re safe, in the event of a catastrophe or natural disaster.

 

As authorities in Nepal continue the hunt for missing trekkers, Facebook launched a new feature to help users let loved ones know they are safe when disaster strikes.

The “Safety Check” tool allows users to “let friends and family know you’re safe; check on others in the affected area; and mark your friends as safe,” Facebook said Wednesday in a press release.

In a statement explaining its approval of the $19-billon deal, the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, said Facebook and WhatsApp were “not close competitors” and that consumers would continue to have a “wide array of choices”.

A Be’er Sheva man was indicted yesterday on charges of incitement to racism and to violence or terrorism, after creating a Facebook group called “A real Arab man is an Arab in the grave.”

There is no indication of who established the page, which was created on June 13, one day after the abduction of the three teens in the West Bank. But according to statistics provided by Facebook under People Talking About This, the most popular age group for those who liked the page is 18 to 24 and the most popular location is Jerusalem.

The official Facebook page Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party has posted a cartoon comparing the three kidnapped Israeli students to rats.

The post on the “Palestinian National Liberation Movement “Fatah” / Central Page” shows three rats with Stars of David dangling from a fishing rod; its implications are unmistakable.

The sickening cartoon illustrates the mixed messages sent by the PA; on the one hand, Abbas promised to help Israel find the abducted teens – even as a senior PA official denied his administration would take any responsibility for the kidnappings. Continue Reading »

The report, by the iSight security group, said that Iranian hackers used profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media vehicles to trick Israelis and supporters of Israel to connect to unsafe links on a phony news web site, where they would be sent a virus that could sweep their computers and gather information about logins and passwords for e-mail accounts and sensitive web sites. DUBAI  – A conservative Iranian court opened a case against instant messaging services WhatsApp and Instagram while also summoning Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg over complaints of privacy violation, state news agency ISNA reported on Tuesday.

The case underscores the growing struggle between moderate Iranian president Hassan Rouhani’s drive to increase Internet freedoms and demands by the conservative judiciary for tighter controls.
