Jordan to attain seat on UN Security Council after Saudi Arabia refused

UN General Assembly to vote on giving Jordan the seat traditionally reserved for an Muslim country after Riyadh refused the offer.

 

 

Jordan’s foreign ministry said Monday the kingdom has presented a request to the United Nations seeking candidacy for a Security Council seat that Saudi Arabia had turned down.

The Saudis’ rejection of the seat — just 24 hours after it was elected — had stunned the world organization.

According to the Jordanian ministry statement Monday, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh telephoned UN chief Ban Ki-moon late Sunday after sending Jordan’s “official request” in writing.

Israel will seek UN Security Council seat for 2019-20

 

‘We’re going all out to win’ reported Israel’s UN Ambassador Prosor, but other UN diplomats admit it won’t be easy in wake of strong anti-Israel bloc.

Israel said on Thursday it plans to run for a rotating seat on the UN Security Council for the first time ever for 2019-2020, although UN diplomats said it will not be easy for the Jewish state to win.

UN hypocrisy is always reaching new heights. This time the UNSC declined to investigate claims of a Syrian chemical weapons massacre.

The United Nations on Wednesday again revealed its true colors when it stopped short of ordering an official probe into charges that the Syrian government had killed hundreds of its own citizens in a chemical weapons attack.

Car bomb detonated near Iran, Hezbollah compound in Damascus

Israel Radio reports that Syrian rebels claim responsibility for an attack at a compound in Damascus, which killed 40 Hezbollah & Iranian fighters.

Syrian rebel forces claim they killed at least 40 Hezbollah and Iranian fighters in Damascus, according to Israel Radio.

The rebels say they detonated a car bomb near a compound where the operatives from Iran and Hezbollah gathered for a meeting, Israel Radio reported. These claims could not be independently corroborated.

Last month, the UN Security Council called on Lebanese Hezbollah militants to end any involvement in the conflict in neighboring Syria, while Lebanon’s UN envoy pledged that his country would keep its borders open to Syrians fleeing the violence.

Palestinian representative to the UN, Riyad Mansour, stated Tuesday that Israel was committing “war crimes” against his people.

Israel on Saturday accused Syrian forces of trying to provoke conflict following a border clash.

Tensions around Golan Heights ceasefire zone between the two rivals have escalated since Syrian forces fired across the UN-patrolled ceasefire line and hit an Israeli military vehicle on Tuesday.

Germany plans to replace Israel in the 2018 UN Security Council

 

Israel has long sought a position on the security council, and it appeared likely when it was scheduled for a seat in 2018, but Germany’s decision to seek the spot eliminates Israel, who lacks the stature to rival Germany’s bid.

Merkel: Russia & China realize Assad’s time is up
