Surgeons in Israel Perform Pioneering Treatment for Liver Cancer

Hadassah surgeon Dr. Mohamed Faroja reports on the use of electrical current to remove malignant tumors after operation on a liver cancer patient: “The method does not generate excessive heat or cold in the body, and can therefore be applied close to blood vessels and vital organs without harming them.”

A new method for operating on liver cancer patients was put to the test for the first time in Israel recently at Hadassah University Hospital-Ein Kerem in Jerusalem. The method applies a direct flow of high-voltage electrical currents to the malignant tumor and has raised new hope for patients diagnosed with the disease.

Israel’s New ‘Karish’ Natural-Gas Field Could Hold 2 Trillion CF of Gas

Geologists report that there’s a very good chance Israel has 2 trillion more cubic feet of natural-gas than was previously thought.

The Delek group, along with its partner, Avner Oil Exploration Ltd., on Sunday morning informed the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange that it was preparing to drill another exploratory well in the Mediterranean. According to geological surveys, the companies said, there was a 70% chance that some 2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas were located underground at the “Karish” (“Shark”) drilling site, off the coast of Nahariya.

The site was previously unexplored, and is not connected to the other large fields being explored and drilled by Delek, Avner, and Noble Energy, which are working in the Tamar and Leviathan gas fields. Continue Reading »

If all goes as planned, within two years Israelis will be the first people to try out a futuristic rapid transport system designed by NASA’s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, California.

Israel’s NasVax reported that its testing shows that administering BBS antibody to animals reduces levels of the proteins that are associated with symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease

Experts estimate that just in the U.S. between 4-5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s.

The Israeli company NasVax announced on Wednesday that testing has shown that administering the BBS antibody to animals reduces levels of the tau and amyloid beta proteins, strengthening cognitive abilities and reducing brain inflammation. Cognitive impairment and brain inflammation are typical symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Excavators discovered the well during a dig of the Israel Antiquities Authority at Enot Nisanit in the western Jezreel Valley, which occurred ahead of an enlargement of HaYogev Junction at Road 66 by the National Roads Company.

RAY: A Unique Israeli Smartphone For The Visually-Impaired

RAY can be used for messaging, voice recording, email, automatic backup & even location services.

RAY will also combine the functions of various customized gadgets such as audio book-readers and voice-enabled MP3 players.

 

The visually impaired may have been using phones adapted for them for years, but access to smartphones and more specifically apps, is still beyond reach. An Israeli company called Project Ray recently announced the development of a smartphone for the visually impaired, called the RAY.

In a groundbreaking research experiment that could pay tremendous dividends down the road, the neurology department of Tel Aviv University (TAU) has used an MRI to scan the healthy brains of 120 Israelis and Europeans aged between 25 and 35.

TAU hopes to develop the world’s first atlas of the human brain

The purpose of using the Magnetic Resonance Instrument (MRI) on the subjects is reportedly to compile enough information to comprise the world’s first “atlas” of the makeup of the brain’s white matter.

Spearheaded by TAU’s Professor Yaniv Assaf, the new initiative, known as the CONNECT project, could be an important step in recognizing neurological and psychiatric diseases early enough so that treatment could help those victimized. Continue Reading »
