Customs authorities nab Palestinian smuggling ancient Roman coins out of Jordan

 

Returning Palestinian from the Arab village of Tulkarem was caught attempting to cross the Allenby Border Crossing from Jordan with a ‘heavy coat’ containing 53 historical coins from the Roman period.

Customs authorities at the Allenby Crossing between Jordan and Israel foiled on Sunday an attempt to smuggle coins from the Roman and Mameluke periods into Israel.

The smuggler, a resident of the Palestinian Authority city of Tulkarm, was crossing back into Israel from Jordan when he was tagged for a more thorough search by the Israeli Customs Authority.

3 Palestinians arrested: More Jewish History Being Stolen by Palestinians

 

The 12-centimeter high sculpture of King Herod’s lover Mariamne, also known as Miriam in Hebrew, valued at nearly a million dollars, was confiscated by the Palestinian Authority who claim it as ‘Palestinian culture’.

The Palestinian Preventive Security Services (PPS) arrested Monday night three Palestinians who tried to smuggle an ancient statue of King Herod’s lover from the West Bank city of Tulkarm into Israel.

A statement released by the PPS following the incident read: “Based on intelligence information, security forces burst on Sunday into a home in Zeita, a village in north Tulkarm, and carried out a complicated security operation, during which they arrested three archaeologists and confiscated the statue.” Continue Reading »

Antiquities Thieves Nabbed Red-Handed Pillaging Judean Desert Caves

Arab thieves inflicted significant damage to ancient cave-site in their attempt to purloin precious ancient artifacts dating back to pre-Roman period.

Just a few days after their dramatic arrest amidst the Judean Desert cliffs, would-be thieves of ancient scrolls and precious archaeological artifacts were indicted this morning in a Be’er Sheva court.

Concluding a year-long Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) operation to locate such thieves, with the help of Israel Police, this was the first time in 30 years that robbers had been caught in the area.

Arabs Caught Red Handed Robbing Ancient Burial Cave

Three Arab suspects were caught inside the 1st century cave near Kibbutz Metzer, with digging tools in hand.

A protracted surveillance operation led to the capture of three suspects who were caught red handed robbing an ancient grave near Kibbutz Metzer.

Inspectors for the Unit for Prevention of Theft in the Antiquities Authority caught the suspects inside a burial cave dating from the 1st century CE.
