Arab nations consider boycotting Australian products over its East Jerusalem status

Australia tries to calm crisis after its Attorney General, George Brandis, said East Jerusalem should not be defined as ‘occupied.’

 

SYDNEY ־ Arab nations may boycott Australian goods in protest at Canberra’s “shameful” declaration last week that it will no longer refer to East Jerusalem as “occupied.”

A delegation of almost 20 ambassadors and senior diplomats – including representatives from Indonesia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan – lodged a formal complaint with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia’s capital last week, local media reported.

One of the envoys, Jordanian Ambassador Rima Alaadeen, said activists were urging people to boycott Australian goods during Ramadan later this month.

Hijab ban causes protests at East Jerusalem’s Christian schools

Christian schools’ refusal to allow its Muslim  students wear a hijab on school grounds has begun to test the institutions’ famed openness.

 

The church-run schools in East Jerusalem are considered the best schools in that part of the city — some would say in the entire city. Their Christian administrators are proud of the religious tolerance and openness that typifies their institutions, where a majority of the students are Muslim.

But in recent years, these schools’ adamant refusal to let female students wear a hijab on school grounds has threatened to disrupt this openness.

Israel Police Raid Palestine TV studios in E. Jerusalem

 

An investigation into questionable network broadcasts of ‘incitement to violence’ got 3 staff members detained for questioning by Israel Police detectives.

Israeli police raided the East Jerusalem studios of Palestine TV on Friday and briefly detained three staff for questioning, a spokeswoman said.

“Police carried out searches at the headquarters of the television channel, as part of an investigation into the content of its programs,” spokeswoman Luba Samri told AFP.

“Three employees were arrested, questioned and released,” she said, adding that “no programs were interrupted and the investigation is ongoing.” Continue Reading »

PLO letter penned by senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, objects to Australia’s decision, quoting UN resolutions that are not legally binding & using the same erroneous popular political Arab rhetoric about East Jerusalem and construction of Jewish towns.

In a letter sent to Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Palestinian Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat said the Palestinians view this decision “in the gravest terms,” and accused Australia of not recognizing the illegality of Israel’s settlements policy.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s government has decided to drop the word “occupied” when describing Israel’s settlements in East Jerusalem, Australian Associated Press reported Thursday.

According to the report, the government said it was “unhelpful” at a time when the peace process was still viable.

According to new reports, the American administration has promised the new Fatah-Hamas unity government, which was sworn in this Monday, that it will convince Israel to allow that new government’s elections to be held in the eastern part of Jerusalem.

“A source that knows things,” apparently from within the Palestinian Authority (PA) or Hamas, was quoted in the Jordanian paper Al-Arab Al-Youm, reporting the American promise to work for parliamentary and presidential elections for the new unity government to be held in the Israeli capital. Jerusalem Building Committee passes controversial City of David visitors’ center

Elad group received permission for a 16,600 square-meter building as gateway to City of David in Jerusalem.

 

 

The Jerusalem Regional Planning and Building Committee approved the construction of a controversial visitors’ center for the City of David just outside the Old City walls. The committee heard objections to the huge project for eight hours before approving it Thursday evening.

Residents of Silwan, where the center will be located, claimed the large structure, which is intended for serving tourism and educational services for the City of David National Park, does not take the needs of local residents into consideration.

Even as United States-sponsored peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians unravel, quiet negotiations over 1.4 billion shekels ($402 million) in unpaid electricity bills owed by the Palestinians are making progress.

The debt, which has been run up by the Palestinian Authority’s refusal to pay the Israel Electric Corporation for power supplied in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, has almost doubled in the past year.

Soldier LIED Blaming Arab Attack for Silly Fall

IDF soldier admitted to Police investigators he was not attacked, rather simply fell down.

 

An Israeli army soldier admitted to police that he was not stabbed by a group of young Arabs on Thursday in Jerusalem, but instead fell, contrary to his first version of events.

Earlier it was reported that the soldier’s alleged Arab assailants fled the scene in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Pisgat Ze’ev after stabbing him in the leg and lightly wounding him.

Police believed the attack was nationalistically motivated and launched a search for the attackers.

After years of water theft/piracy, illegal building with unauthorized connections to state water main, and the residents refusal to pay water bills, tens of thousands go dry for 3 weeks, with Water Ministry, Water Authority, Jerusalem municipality & the Hagihon utility passing blame.

 

 

The Association for Civil Rights in Israel and east Jerusalem residents appealed to the High Court of Justice on Tuesday, petitioning against the lack of running water in several neighborhoods east of the security barrier for the past three weeks.

Jerusalem Arabs set ablaze a police station next to the Lions’ Gate in the capital’s Old City on Wednesday.

Aryeh King, nationalist Jerusalem city councilman and member of the municipality’s Emergency and Security Committee, was present at the attack and managed to document it. According to King, police officers fled the scene.

“Unfortunately the prime minister is instructing the authorities to avoid eastern Jerusalem, and these are the results,” charged King.

“Last night the funeral of a terrorist was held there, they marched from the Mount of Olives towards the Lions’ Gate attacking everything in their path and didn’t let Jews pass,” reported King. Continue Reading »

Attempt to Stab Border Policeman Foiled in East Jerusalem

Female Arab terrorist attempted to stab Border Police officer in Issawiya but was stopped in time.

Border Police officers foiled a stabbing attack in the eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiya on Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred as dozens of Arab youths were throwing rocks at Border Police officers who were patrolling the neighborhood.

The officers began arresting the Arabs, when one of them, a female, tried stabbing one of the officers. She was immediately stopped. The officer was not hurt.

Earlier Wednesday, a Palestinian Arab man attempted to run over IDF soldiers near Homesh in northern Samaria, before fleeing the scene of the crime. Continue Reading »
