Residential Areas in Galilee Sustain Hits Despite Iron Dome

 

The IDF’s Iron Dome battery deployed in northern Israel  intercepted one rocket launched at a northern Israeli city, but failed to intercept 2 other rockets that hit 2 other Galilee communities.

IAF has launched an investigation into these misses.

The Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted a rocket for the first time along the Israeli-Lebanese border Thursday, but apparently, out of the four rockets that were launched from Tyre, Lebanon, two managed to hit residential areas.

Seeing as the Iron Dome battery intercepted only one Katiusha, the IAF is investigating how two other managed to reach Israel – one in Kibbutz Gesher HaZiv in the Western Galilee and the other in Moshav Shavei Zion in the Western Galilee. Continue Reading »

US report: Jerusalem willing to forgo some US missile defense aid

Israel reportedly offered to drop about $55m. in US aid due to the considerable cuts Washington is forced to make on its defense budget.

 

Israel has offered to waive nearly $55 million in US aid for its missile defense programs, the Defense News website reported over the weekend.

Defense officials in Israel declined to comment on the report.

According to US-based Defense News, in light of the considerable cuts Washington has made to its defense budget, Jerusalem has sought to shoulder its part in the new, harsher financial reality.

Despite reports of the difficult conditions that IDF Iron Dome soldiers are subjected to, commanders decided to house soldiers of the Eilat Iron Dome battery, which was deployed there only 10 days ago, in tents and not air-conditioned accommodation. Generals report: Hamas & Hezbollah rocket threat outpacing Israel’s defensive capabilities

Brig. Gen. reports in a war that could last a month, as many as 1,500 short- to mid-range rockets might be launched at the north alone each day.

 

The Israeli response to the rocket threat still lags behind progress being made by Hezbollah, Hamas and other groups, according to a report published this week by Tel Aviv University’s Institute for National Security Studies.

The IDF has deployed an Iron Dome battery in the southern city of Eilat as the Egyptian army launches a large-scale operation to purify the Sinai Peninsula of al-Qaeda inspired terrorist cells.

The IDF Spokesman’s Office stated that Iron Dome batteries are redeployed periodically in accordance with appraisals of the security situation.

House committee ups missile funding, seeks partnership in Iron Dome

Armed Service Committee tripled Obama’s request for missile defense from $96 million to $284 but now wishes to involve the U.S. in Iron Dome’s development.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. House of Representatives Armed Service Committee tripled President Obama’s request for missile defense collaboration with Israel and sought to include the United States in Iron Dome development.

The increase in the National Defense Authorization Act from $96 million to $284 million referred from the committee in a 59-2 vote June 6 to the full House includes an additional $15 million in funding for Iron Dome, the short range anti-missile program Israel used against Hamas last November during the Gaza war.

Pentagon to invest additional $395.9 million in Iron Dome

Washington intends to allocate $220 million in 2014, $176 million in 2015 for Iron Dome missile defense systems protecting Israel.

The United States plans to finance the Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile by the amount of $220 million for the fiscal year 2014, despite the US’s budget cuts.

According Missile Defense Agency (MDA), the Pentagon plans to spend $220.3 million on the Iron Dome.

The Pentagon, which had already spent $204 million in 2011 and $70 million in 2012, also foresees a budget of 176 million for the Iron Dome system in 2015. Continue Reading »

Against the backdrop of foreign media reports on an Israeli Air Force strike in Syria, a third Iron Dome battery has been deployed in northern Israel.

This raises the number of missile-interception systems installed in the north to three. Over the last 10 days Iron Dome batteries have been deployed in the Upper Galilee area and in greater Haifa as well.
