Abbas Promises Fatah : There’s ‘No Way’ We’ll Recognize Israel

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas stood his ground on Friday and reiterated that he will not recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

Speaking to youth activists of his Fatah party and quoted by The Associated Press (AP), Abbas unequivocally declared that there is “no way” he will recognize Israel as a Jewish state and accept a Palestinian capital in just a portion of eastern Jerusalem.

Israel Police prevent terrorist-related gas explosion in Jerusalem neighborhood

3 apartment buildings in Jerusalem evacuated after residents notice 2 deliberately severed cooking-gas lines.

 

 

A massive gas explosion was narrowly averted Tuesday morning after residents of Armon Hanatziv reported high concentrations of leaking gas and subsequently discovered two deliberately severed gas lines to their building, police said.

According to a police spokesman, upon smelling the odorous gas several residents promptly contacted officers who arrived within minutes along with Magen David Adom and firefighting units to prevent an imminent and deadly blast.

“The pipes were intentionally cut which caused extreme danger, so police evacuated three buildings in the area and shut off the gas supply,” the police official said shortly after the incident. Continue Reading »

Report: Vatican Maneuvering for Control of Mount Zion in Jerusalem

Christian leaders reportedly pressured Israel to turn over control of Mount Zion in Jerusalem during a clandestine meeting of senior city officials.

The meeting took place Tuesday in the office of Attorney Amnon Merhav, the director-general of the Jerusalem municipality. It was attended by officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, President’s Office, Tourism Ministry, Police, Kotel Rabbi’s Office, and more.

During the meeting, representatives of Christian groups in the capital pushed Jerusalem leaders to give the Catholic Church control over the Mount Zion area that includes the “Hall of the Last Supper.” Continue Reading »

Israel to build 9-story yeshiva in East Jerusalem

Plans for a 9-story Jewish ultra-Orthodox seminary to be built in Jerusalem’s densely-populated Palestinian neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, were submitted today.

Jerusalem’s planning committee moved forwards on Wednesday with plans to build a nine-story Jewish seminary in the heart of a densely-populated Palestinian neighborhood near the Old City.

Plans for the new tower block, to be built in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of Arab east Jerusalem, were deposited for consultation, giving the public 60 days to submit any objections, settlement watchdog Peace Now said.

“It’s a plan for a nine-story, ultra-Orthodox yeshiva in Sheikh Jarrah which was deposited today for objections,” spokesperson Lior Amihai told AFP. Continue Reading »

Ultra-Orthodox residents of Jerusalem are reportedly trying to forestall Hollywood star Natalie Portman from shooting scenes from her upcoming directorial debut in Israel’s capital, increasingly defined by its religious majority.

According to the Haaretz daily, Portman, is set to film in an ultra-Orthodox part of the Nahlaot neighborhood. While she coordinated the shoot with the Jerusalem Municipality, officials apparently failed to inform the residents, who wrote a letter complaining that the filming will take place near synagogues and yeshivot. Israel’s leading daily newspaper, Yediot Ahronot, ran a feature story this week warning that the nation’s capital is quietly changing from “Jerusalem of Gold” to “Jerusalem of Hamas.”

It seems the Palestinian terrorist organization has been successfully establishing itself as the municipal director of the eastern half of Jerusalem in recent years.

Canada & U.S. urge UNESCO not to postpone ‘Land of Israel’ exhibit

UNESCO postponed Jewish exhibit in response to pressure by Arab League.

The United States and Canada called on UNESCO to rescind its sudden decision to suspend an exhibit on Jewish ties to the Land of Israel – due to open at its Paris headquarters on Monday – in response to a protest by Arab states who fear it could damage the peace process.

Forget Hawaii! Newly remarried couple Pamela Anderson and Rick Salomon took an El Al flight straight to Israel after exchanging vows on Sunday. According to The Times of Israel, the former “Baywatch” star and her film producer hubby (of Paris Hilton sex tape fame) are staying in a suite at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. They have already visited the Dead Sea.

It’s not Anderson’s first trip down the aisle with Salomon (the two were married briefly in 2007) or her first trip to Israel.

In Jerusalem the owner of Italian trattoria cites high costs and unneeded inconvenience as reasons for parting with Rabbinate’s Kosher certification. ‘There are plenty of people who trust me & my word more than the Rabbinate’s word that we’re kosher,’the owner claims.

16 yr-old Arab girl attempts to stab Border Guard policeman in Jerusalem

 

A 2nd policeman was lightly hurt during scuffle to bring Palestinian teen under control.

A 16-year-old Arab girl attempted to stab a border police officer with a knife near Nablus Gate in Jerusalem on Friday. The suspect is a resident of the Jabal al-Mukaber neighborhood in east Jerusalem police said.

Security personnel succeeded in disarming the woman and bringing her under control but in the process, one of them was injured lightly in the leg. The injured man received medical treatment at the scene.

December’s snowstorm cost Jerusalem $80 million in damages

The unusual snowstorm that swept Jerusalem last month will cost the capital more than $80 million in damages, Mayor Nir Barkat said Wednesday.

Appearing before the Knesset Finance Committee, Barkat demanded that the state compensate the municipality for the estimated 290 million shekel cost of repairs. “This was a tsunami that the city has never seen before,” Barkat said. “The state must recognize this storm as a natural disaster.”

“The municipality expects the government to volunteer and provide significant financial assistance to enable the city to return to its pre-storm state and to ensure that the damage does not fall on the residents’ shoulders and double their suffering,” he said. Continue Reading »
