Presidential Medal to be awarded to Spielberg , Kahalani & Wiesel

 

 

Israel’s President Peres announced the names of Israel’s Presidential Medal. This year’s recipients include Elie Wiesel, Avigdor Kahalani and Steven Spielberg among others.

According to the president’s office, 2013 recipients will include: Brigadier General (Res.) Avigdor Kahalani, Professor Elie Wiesel, filmmaker Steven Spielberg and Rabbi Elimelech Firer.

The committee deciding the medal recipients included dignitaries such as former Supreme Court President Meir Shamger, who headed the committee, and Israel’s fifth president Yitzhak Navon. Continue Reading »

Peres attends opening of Latvia museum dedicated to rescuers of WWII Jews

President Shimon Peres took part in a ceremony marking the opening of a museum in Latvia dedicated to a couple who saved some 50 Jews from extermination.

The museum in downtown Riga, Latvia’s capital, is located next to the property once owned by Zanis Lipke, a port worker who together with his wife hid Jews in an underground pit measuring some 9 square meters.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The president of Israel has invited New York Knicks star Amare Stoudemire to play for the country’s national basketball team because of his ties to Judaism.

Shimon Peres met with Stoudemire on Thursday to discuss the player’s charity efforts. Stoudemire, who says he has ”Hebrew roots,” has traveled to Israel before and Peres urged him to help the national team.

The six-time NBA All-Star already has significant ties to Israeli basketball.

Archbishop of Canterbury visits Yad Vashem with Israeli President

After numerous visits to Israel, Welby meets Peres for very first time and is clearly moved at Yad Vashem, saying peace is a “challenge.”

In saying what a privilege it was to meet the President, “and a great privilege to always come to this land.”

Peres, who had come to the meeting at his residence directly from the Herzl Day Commemoration where he was the keynote speaker, also refrained from directly mentioning the name of the country and called it “the Holy Land”.

JNF cancels Clinton invitation by withdrawing $500,000 offer to attend

Bennett Tells Peres: We have no more land to give away

“Every time we leave an area, more people are killed,” said Bennett in response to Peres’ appearance at the World Economic Forum in neighboring Jordan, where the Israeli president gushed that Israel is prepared to pay almost any price for a peace deal with the Palestinians.
