Presidential Medal to be awarded to Spielberg , Kahalani & Wiesel

 

 

Israel’s President Peres announced the names of Israel’s Presidential Medal. This year’s recipients include Elie Wiesel, Avigdor Kahalani and Steven Spielberg among others.

According to the president’s office, 2013 recipients will include: Brigadier General (Res.) Avigdor Kahalani, Professor Elie Wiesel, filmmaker Steven Spielberg and Rabbi Elimelech Firer.

The committee deciding the medal recipients included dignitaries such as former Supreme Court President Meir Shamger, who headed the committee, and Israel’s fifth president Yitzhak Navon. Continue Reading »

Peres attends opening of Latvia museum dedicated to rescuers of WWII Jews

President Shimon Peres took part in a ceremony marking the opening of a museum in Latvia dedicated to a couple who saved some 50 Jews from extermination.

The museum in downtown Riga, Latvia’s capital, is located next to the property once owned by Zanis Lipke, a port worker who together with his wife hid Jews in an underground pit measuring some 9 square meters.

The three-story museum resembles an overturned ship and is designed to give visitors a claustrophobic sense of life in a tiny bunker. Continue Reading »

Israeli President sends a hearty ‘Mazal Tov’ to Will & Kate

NBA star Amare Stoudemire gets Presidential invitation to the Holy Land

Israel’s President Shimon Peres has always been a man with big ideas. But this is his biggest yet… Get Amar’e Stoudemire to play for the Israeli national team!

JERUSALEM (AP) — The president of Israel has invited New York Knicks star Amare Stoudemire to play for the country’s national basketball team because of his ties to Judaism.

Shimon Peres met with Stoudemire on Thursday to discuss the player’s charity efforts. Stoudemire, who says he has ”Hebrew roots,” has traveled to Israel before and Peres urged him to help the national team.

The six-time NBA All-Star already has significant ties to Israeli basketball.

Archbishop of Canterbury visits Yad Vashem with Israeli President

After numerous visits to Israel, Welby meets Peres for very first time and is clearly moved at Yad Vashem, saying peace is a “challenge.”

Although he has been to Israel many times before, for Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, his meeting on Thursday with President Shimon Peres was a first.

In saying what a privilege it was to meet the President, “and a great privilege to always come to this land.”

Peres, who had come to the meeting at his residence directly from the Herzl Day Commemoration where he was the keynote speaker, also refrained from directly mentioning the name of the country and called it “the Holy Land”.

Peres vows to Colombian President Israel’s Help to Boost Their Economy

JNF cancels Clinton invitation by withdrawing $500,000 offer to attend

Following uproar in Israel & abroad, the JNF announced it will no longer pay former U.S. President $500,000 to speak at Peres’ Birthday gala.

The Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemet Leyisrael) said on Thursday that it will not take part in an upcoming gala event attended by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and will not pay him $500,000 to give a speech at this gala.

The British government vehemently opposes boycotts of Israel, British Ambassador to Israel Matthew Gould affirmed Monday night “clearly and unambiguously,” as his embassy hosted a celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 87th birthday. “They (boycotts) do nothing to build understanding, they put up walls when we should be tearing them down,” he asserted.

While Gould acknowledged that the two countries “don’t always agree on everything,” pointing to the issue of settlements, he said that “the important thing is that we disagree as friends, and we will stand alongside Israel as a friend.”

Bennett Tells Peres: We have no more land to give away

Senior gov’t minister challenges President Shimon Peres for suggesting Jerusalem is ready to continue peace negotiations on Arab terms.

Israeli Economic and Trade Minister Naftali Bennett this week publicly disagreed with President Shimon Peres that Israel has any more land to give in an already failed land-for-peace process.

“Every time we leave an area, more people are killed,” said Bennett in response to Peres’ appearance at the World Economic Forum in neighboring Jordan, where the Israeli president gushed that Israel is prepared to pay almost any price for a peace deal with the Palestinians.

Bennett, head of the Jewish Home party and an influential member of the ruling coalition, said Peres’ vision of birthing a Palestinian Arab state on ancient Jewish lands is beyond faulty: “Now is the time to make it clear that this is our country and it is not for sale.” Continue Reading »
