2,300 yr-old town discovered outside Jerusalem

 

During the construction of a gas pipe line 6 months ago, a Second Temple era rural town was found and has been under excavation ever since.

Remains of a village that is 2,300 years old have been uncovered near the “Burma Road”, on the main route to Jerusalem.

The remnants of the rural town, which was lived in for approximately two centuries during the Second Temple era were first discovered in June 2013, when Israel Natural Gas Lines (INGL) began construction on a gas line running from the coast to the outskirts of Jerusalem. Continue Reading »

Israeli tech company Viber sold to Japan’s Rakuten for $900 million

 

Israeli-founded Skype rival, video & chat platform Viber, is registered in Cyprus but was founded by Israelis & has development offices in Israel.

Rakuten Inc. a large Japanese Internet services company, announced on Friday its acquisition of pioneering messaging and VoIP company, Viber. The pricetag: $900 million.

Following the sale, Rakuten’s Chairman and CEO, Hiroshi Mikitani said, “Viber understands how people actually want to engage and have built the only service that truly delivers on all fronts.”

Viber CEO Talmon Marco said  that Viber’s vision, “is to be the world’s number one communications platform and our combination with Rakuten is an important step in that direction.”

WATCH: Israeli Company Testing Unpiloted Flying Ambulance

The drone ambulance, named AirMule can fly with up to 800 pounds of cargo in search and rescue operations.

 
 
Israeli startup Urban Aeronautics is testing a flying ambulance drone they hope to release before 2020, Business Insider reports. The vehicle, which is called the AirMule, would be used to perform rescues in places like dense urban environments, where helicopter maneuvering is difficult. The AirMule is directed and controlled remotely and it can fly unpiloted with up to 880 pounds of cargo.

Its primary purpose is to assist with rescues during military operations:

A much quieter, remotely-piloted aircraft like this would be a game changer for military personnel.

Viber, Israeli rival to Skype, negotiating $300m sale to Chinese buyer

Israeli Mobile app Viber, allows free phone calls, text messaging and picture sharing from phone and computer.

Viber, the Israeli mobile application that allows users to make phone calls and send text messages for free, is in talks with a potential Chinese buyer for a deal that could be worth around $300 million.

The news comes some six months after Viber approached investment banking firm Goldman Sachs to help it find a buyer. Viber has a large user base in Southeast Asia, although the negotiations are said to be proceeding at a slow pace with the Chinese firm.

WATCH: 7th Armored Brigade upgrades to Merkava Mark IV with Trophy missile shield

Based in the Golan Heights, the 7th Armored Brigade has traded in their Merkava Mark II tanks for the worlds most undated tank.

 

 

An Armored Corps brigade based in the North is set to do away with its aged tanks and begin receiving the IDF’s last word in tank warfare, the Merkava Mark IV, equipped with the Trophy antitank- missile shield.

Based in the Golan Heights, the 7th Armored Brigade has relied on Merkava Mark II tanks for more than 20 years. Some of the older tanks were manufactured in the late 1970s, but have since undergone a series of technological upgrades. Continue Reading »

A simple form of skin-to-skin contact between mothers and premature babies right after birth enhances the babies’ brain development until age 10, according to research conducted at Bar-Ilan University.

This  find, in the basement of a building on Rua do Visconde da Luz, Coimbra, may be considered among the oldest mikvahs ever discovered in Europe.

Plumbers fixing a water leak in central Portugal discovered what appears to be a cluster of 600-year-old Jewish ritual baths.

The discovery was made earlier this year in the city of Coimbra as the plumbers were replacing the piping of an old building in what used to be the Jewish part of the Old City, according to a report Thursday by the Publico daily.
