BERLIN – Germany has promised to strengthen security at the Holocaust Memorial in the heart of Berlin after a video published on the Internet showed a man urinating and people launching fireworks from its grey concrete structure on New Year’s Eve.

“The incidents are outrageous and to be deplored,” German Culture Minister Monika Gruetters was quoted as saying by Bild newspaper on Thursday.

A foundation that supervises the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which was opened in 2005, will talk to police and arrange tighter security, Gruetters said. Continue Reading »

In Canada, a Winnipeg provincial court judge recently ruled that a 2011 altercation at a local high school, in which a student lit a 15-year-old Jewish student’s hair on fire with a lighter while saying “let’s burn the Jew,” was not a hate crime.

Many American scholars regret ‘misguided’ ASA boycott of Israeli academia

ASA scholars stand behind the symbolic decision to boycott, but many of their colleagues worry that Israel-bashing has become too trendy in U.S. academia.

 

 

As the American Studies Association endorsed a boycott of Israeli universities and academic institutions Monday, colleagues at the Association for Jewish Studies gathered in Boston for their annual conference where several called the boycott “misguided” and even “offensive”.

A Romanian public broadcaster distanced itself from a Christmas carol celebrating the Holocaust that aired on the new channel.

TVR3 Verde, a television channel for rural communities, presented the carol on Dec. 5 during its maiden transmission.

NEW YORK — Chava, a student at a Chabad seminary, has lived in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn for six years, but it’s only in the past few days that she started carrying pepper spray in her handbag.

Her younger brother gave her the deterrent after news hit of a string of recent attacks against Orthodox Jews, seven of them in Crown Heights.

Just over a week since an American university severed ties with the Hamas-linked Al-Quds University in Jerusalem, after pictures emerged showing a Nazi-style on-campus rally by Islamic Jihad in November, further evidence of fascist-style events at the flagship Palestinian Arab institution has emerged.

Despite Nazi similarities, Bard College decides to stay with Al-Quds

The US university with the closest ties to Al-Quds University, Bard College in New York, has announced it will continue its partnership, despite two other American colleges severing ties with the Palestinian school.

A man accused of participating in the “Knockout Game” was charged with assaulting an Orthodox Jewish man in Brooklyn.

Amrit Marajh of Brooklyn was arraigned on Saturday and released on $750 bail. He is charged with misdemeanor assault and harassment. He was not charged with a hate crime, according to the New York Times.

The attack reportedly occurred early Friday morning, when the 24-year-old Orthodox man says he was boxed in by a group of men and punched out by one of them. Continue Reading »

More European Jews Consider Emigrating Their Families to Israel

 

Each year, the surveys continue to show rising anti-Semitism in most of Europe, causing the local Jews to live in growing fear.
