Bad news for Hamas: Egyptian gov’t designates Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist group

 

New policy comes just days after suicide bomb that killed 16 at an Egyptian Police station.

Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis claims responsibility for this week’s attack.

The Egyptian government intensified its crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood on Wednesday, formally listing the group as a terrorist organization after accusing it of carrying out a suicide bomb attack on a police station that killed 16 people.

The Brotherhood on Tuesday condemned the attack in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura, north of Cairo. Earlier on Wednesday, a Sinai-based Islamist group, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, claimed responsibility for the attack that also wounded some 140 people. Continue Reading »

Egypt Military Reports They Prevented a Hamas Car-Bomb Attack

Egyptian army report claims they arrested a Hamas terrorist who admitted his planning to plant a car bomb near undisclosed security target.

The Egyptian Army announced Wednesday that it had apprehended a Hamas terrorist in the northern Sinai Desert, Al-Arabiya reports.

The terrorist was named as Jumaa Khamis Mohammed Brayha, who claimed to stem from a family powerful in Hamas’s ranks.

During interrogation, according to the Egyptian army, the young man admitted that he was intending to blow up a Mercedes parked near a crucial security target.

Hamas has denied that the detainee was among its ranks and says his name is not even included in the register of residents of the Gaza Strip. Continue Reading »

Former Egyptian President Morsi to stand trial for conspiring with Hamas & Hezbollah

 

Egyptian prosecutor says ousted Islamist president Morsi committed acts of violence & terrorism with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

Morsi is also being charged with conspiracy in “terrorist plan” with Hamas Palestinians from Gaza and with Lebanese terror groups.

CAIRO – Egypt’s public prosecutor ordered former President Mohamed Morsi and 35 other Islamists to stand trial on charges including conspiring with foreign groups to commit terrorist acts in Egypt and divulging military secrets to a foreign state.

Terrorist Behind Eilat Rocket Attack Killed by Egyptian Army

In a shootout, Egyptian soldiers shot to death Ibrahim Abu Atiyeh, leader of the terrorist group responsible for recent rocket attacks on Eilat in August.

Egyptian sources said Monday night that Egyptian Army soldiers had eliminated Ibrahim Abu Atiyeh, a terrorist belonging to the Al Qaeda-linked Ansar Beit al-Makdis terror group. Abu Atiyeh was a leader of the group, which has claimed responsibility for a recent rocket attack on Eilat in August. Abu Atiyeh  was killed in a shootout with Egyptian soldiers in northern Sinai.

The group has been at odds with Eypt’s new military government, and has attempted to kill Egyptian officials, including the country’s interior minister. Continue Reading »

Egypt’s closure of Hamas’ smuggling tunnels worsens unemployment in Gaza

The UN said on Tuesday it had halted work on all but one of its 20 Gaza building projects as a result of an Israeli ban on importing building materials into the Palestinian enclave.

Israel imposed the ban after discovering on October 13 a 2.5-kilometer (1.5-mile) tunnel which it said militants planned to use for attacks inside its territory. Islamist Hamas, which has run the Gaza Strip since 2007, claimed it dug the tunnel.

Cairo officially announced the complete end of all tourism activities with Iran, including direct flights just renewed in March.

The announcement came Tuesday, with Egypt stating it has ordered an end to all tourism activities with Iran. These had increased considerably during the yearlong rule of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood.

PA official blasts token presence at Egypt-Gaza border crossing

 

Hamas accuses the Palestinian Authority of inciting Egypt to keep the Rafah crossing closed to undermine its authority over the coastal territory.

The Palestinian Authority does not want to return to the Rafah border crossing as part of a partial solution to the crisis at the crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, Jibril Rajoub, a senior member of the Fatah Central Committee, announced Saturday.

Rajoub’s announcement came as the Egyptian authorities reopened the border.

“The Palestinian leadership rejects partial appearances, such as the presence of the Presidential Guard at the sovereign border crossings, including Rafah,” Rajoub said.

Egypt has been squeezing Hamas tighter in recent weeks, demanding that its leadership prevent attacks against Israel at all costs. Cairo insists that Hamas stop any assistance to Islamist organizations in Sinai, which are fighting against Egypt’s new rulers.

An Egyptian court on Monday banned the Muslim Brotherhood from carrying out any activities in the country and ordered the seizure of the group’s funds, widening a campaign to debilitate the Islamist movement of deposed President Mohammed Morsi.

Egypt to Hamas: PA forces in place is key to reopening Rafah crossing

 

Cairo says without Abbas’ PA forces, Rafah border crossing will remain closed.

Egypt won’t reopen the Rafah border crossing unless forces loyal to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas are allowed to return to the terminal, the PLO ambassador in Cairo, Barakat al-Farra, announced on Saturday.

Hamas said the announcement proved that the Gaza Strip was facing a “conspiracy.”

Abbas’s presidential guard was in control of the border crossing between 2005 and 2007, when Hamas expelled the PA from the Gaza Strip.

5 Palestinian fisherman get year in jail by Egyptian military court

An Egyptian military court on Wednesday sentenced five Palestinian fishermen to a year in jail for illegally crossing into Egypt’s territorial waters, Egyptian security sources said.

“The court had arrested five Palestinians recently for crossing without permits to the Egyptian waters in North Sinai (that borders Israel and the Palestinian Gaza enclave),” one security source said.
