Facebook leads in most patent applications in Israel

Of the 6,800+ patent applications submitted to the Israel Patent Office in 2017, Facebook leads with 94 requests.
• The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University and the Technion [Israel’s Institute of Technology], top the list of applications by Israeli institutions.

A total of 6,805 patent applications were submitted in Israel in 2017, the Israel Patent Office said on Tuesday.

Social media giant Facebook submitted the largest number of applications, 94, followed by cigarette maker Philip Morris (82), agricultural chemicals company Dow AgroSciences (69) and U.S. defense contractor Raytheon Company (60).

The technological arms of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology topped the list of Israeli corporations that applied for patent registrations. Continue Reading »

Facebook, Twitter delete hundreds of fake Iranian & Russian accounts

Amid worries of foreign attempts to influence U.S. midterm elections, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms have remove hundreds of accounts used to push Iranian and Russian agendas, citing, “coordinated inauthentic behavior” and “manipulation.”

Facebook, Twitter and Alphabet have collectively removed ‎hundreds of accounts tied to Russian and Iranian ‎users that cybersecurity firm FireEye‎ said were ‎promoting Russia’s and Iran’s ‎geopolitical agendas around the world.‎

Some of the Twitter and Facebook accounts were designed to ‎appear as if they belonged to real people in the United States, ‎Britain and Canada, according to FireEye. Continue Reading »

Israel’s Supreme Court: Facebook can be sued in Israel

Israel’s Supreme Court rejected Facebook’s request to dismiss lawsuit filed in Israel and determined that the stipulations in the user-license-agreement should be annulled, allowing lawsuits to be filed in Israel.

The Supreme Court ruled that Israeli claims filed against Facebook will be heard in Israeli courts, even though the user-license-agreement to join the site says suits can only be filed in a California court.

The court accepted the position of the Attorney General, according to which giving multinational corporations the ability to determine jurisdiction in cases involving customers represented a major imbalance of power, even if the user-agreement states that it must be so. Continue Reading »

In a surprise move, Facebook disables Gaza based Palestinian media page

A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment on the disabling of Safa news site account, or on the accounts of 10 Safa editors, all closed.

Over the weekend, Facebook disabled the account of Safa, a Gaza-based Palestinian news site; it had almost 1.3 million followers.

Safa is widely seen as sympathetic to Hamas, but an employee at the news site said in a phone call that the media outlet is “independent” and “has no relationship with Hamas.”

Google and Facebook to begin paying Israel Tax Authority ‘within a year’

With the European Union still dealing with legal the process, Israel Tax Authority will be among the first to tax the internet giants such as Google and Facebook on revenues made on Israelis.

IDF begins informing Gazans exactly who their Hamas leaders are on Facebook

In addition to Israel’s security monitoring on social media of what is happening in the Palestinian territories, IDF’s COGAT unit is using a Facebook page to publish embarrassing details about senior Hamas officials for all to know, in its psychological warfare against Hamas leadership in Gaza, targeting in particular, its new leader, Yahya Sinwar.

An Israeli rights group suing Facebook on behalf of families of victims killed by Palestinian attackers said on Thursday that it will appeal after the case was dismissed by a New York court.

Facebook Reinstates the Fatah Movement Page with Apologies to Palestinian Terrorists

After protest, the page was returned, administrators reinstated, and apologies given to Fatah movement.

Facebook terminates FATAH movement page, blocks all 12 admins to 30 days each

 

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement had its Facebook page shut down, blocks the page’s 12 administrators for promoting violence, a violation of its community standards.

Facebook has shut down the page of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas’s party Fatah, apparently over a picture of late leader Yasser Arafat with a weapon, the movement said on Monday.

“We received a message that our page violated Facebook’s regulations,” Munir al-Jaghub, a media officer with Fatah and one of the page’s administrators, told AFP.

An Israeli resident living in the Ras al-Amud neighborhood in eastern Jerusalem was arrested three weeks ago on suspicion of planning to carry out multiple acts of terrorism in Israel, it was cleared for publication Thursday afternoon.

Palestinian activists boycott Facebook after multiple accounts closed for incitement

 

Facebook, in cooperation with Jerusalem’s request, has disabled a number of Palestinian accounts that the social media giant identified as ‘promoting violence.’

Palestinian activists called on Facebook users to boycott Facebook and instead post tweets on Twitter under the hashtag #FBCensorsPalestine between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Sunday to protest the closure of a number of Palestinian Facebook accounts.
