An Israeli team competing in a race to the moon sponsored by Google has signed a deal with California-based SpaceX for a rocket launch, putting it at the front of the pack and on target for blast-off in late 2017, officials said on Wednesday.

With the deadline to win a $20 million first-place prize just two years off, pressure is mounting on the 16 rivals from around the world hoping to complete a privately funded moon landing. Continue Reading »

Israeli Wins Silver at World Athletics Championships

Fourteen years after Israel’s last medal at the World Athletics Championships, Hanna Knyazyeva-Minenko has won the silver medal in the triple-jump. She also broke the national record, achieving a jump of 14.78 meters.

Colombia’s Caterine Ibarguen comfortably retained her world title at the games in Beijing, stretching her winning streak to 29 competitions and achieving a best of 14.90 meters for the gold medal. Olympic champion Olga Rypakova of Kazakhstan took the bronze.

This is Israel’s third ever medal at the championships, with previous awards going to pole-vaulter Alex Averbukh, who won bronze in 1999 and silver in 2001. Continue Reading »

Israel’s President inspects new IDF submarine during visit to Germany

President Rivlin visits German shipyard in Kiel, where Israeli commandos are presently training to operate new INS Rahav, which is expected to arrive in Haifa during the upcoming year.

President Reuven Rivlin visited the Kiel shipyards in Germany on Wednesday, receiving a private tour aboard the INS Rahav – the fifth submarine expected to arrive in Israel.

“You are our fortified wall on our maritime borders, and nowhere is too far for you when it comes to Israel’s safety,” the president told the submarine commandos.

Watch: Israelis stop and stand still as sirens mark Holocaust Remembrance Day

Sirens went off for 2 minutes at 10:00 a.m. throughout Israel for Holocaust Remembrance Day. Jews, Christians and tourists alike stop whatever they’re doing to honor the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust.

 

At 10 a.m. on Thursday morning, Israel came to a standstill as sirens blared throughout the country to commemorate the 6 million Jewish victims of the Nazi regime. During the two minute siren, traffic came to a standstill and people stopped working to remember the Holocaust.

President Reuven Rivlin on Thursday afternoon hosted 20 Israeli ambassadors and diplomatic mission heads to Asian-Pacific countries at the Presidential Residence in Jerusalem.

“The friendly relationship between Israel and the rising powers in Asia represents an economic and strategic opportunity for both sides,” Rivlin told them. “As a state which seeks new markets for trade, the connection with Asia is more important than ever to Israel.”

The president stressed “Israel is more and more turning to face the East, we are witnessing cross-fertilization in the fields of education, industry, tourism, and security.”

Even as campuses around the world begin their annual “Israel Apartheid Week” festivities, Cook openly praised Israel’s integration of minorities in its burgeoning hi-tech sector.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on Sunday urged Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to renew peace talks instead of pursuing efforts at the International Criminal Court (ICC) or United Nations.

“There is no other way than direct negotiations. Unilateral steps will not solve the conflict, but just give more power to the extremists,” Rivlin was quoted by AFP as having said during a visit by a delegation of U.S. senators headed by Republican John McCain.

Former Knesset speaker, Likud MK Reuven Rivlin, has won Israel’s presidential elections, beating his opponent MK Meir Sheetrit (Hatnua) in the second round of votes.

 

While the office of president is almost completely ceremonial in nature, Israel’s president plays a key role in summoning a party leader to try and form a coalition, after elections to the Knesset are held. If the next election results are close, as many expect them to be, the identity of the president could determine which party leader is summoned first to try and put together a coalition.
