Israel Air Force celebrates 5 years with Iron Dome after 8000 enemy launches

It began with the historic interception of a rocket fired from northern Gaza towards an Ashkelon neighborhood, and since then it has performed more than 1,000 anti-rocket interceptions from 8000 launches the system has identified. These were carried out in seven rounds of escalation and two operations (Operation Pillar of Fire and Operation Protective Edge). The system’s success rate after five years is about ninety percent.

Report: American Casino Magnate Offered Obama $1b for Iron Dome Batteries To Defend Israel

 

 

U.S. casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson, a strong Israel supporter and backer of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, offered in 2013 to pay $1 billion for Iron Dome anti-missile batteries for Israel, Politico reported on Thursday.

Israeli warships armed with Iron Dome anti-missile system will protect gas reserves at sea

Israel’s “Sa’ar 5” warships already equipped with the Barak 1 missile defense system, will incorporate the Iron Dome as well, until new warships reached in a deal with Germany arrive in 2019.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will install its successful Iron Dome missile defence system on warships protecting Israel’s off-shore gas drilling platforms, a temporary measure until new warships acquired in a deal with Germany arrive.

Israel has huge and mostly untapped gas fields that cover some 23,000 square km (9,000 square miles) of sea, more than Israel’s territory on land.

Several Gulf States Attempting to Aquire Israel’s Iron Dome

 

In a deal that could be worth hundreds of billions of dollars, several Arab states are seeking to purchase the Israeli-developed anti-missile defense system, in defense to Iran’s growing arsenal, and regional agenda.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait are attempting to purchase the Israeli-developed Iron Dome missile defense system in light of the threat of Iran’s growing rocket arsenal, Sky News reported on Wednesday.

The deal’s scope, if it were to take place, is estimated to be tens, perhaps hundreds of billions of dollars.

According to the report, the six countries, members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, are conducting talks through American intermediaries, including Raytheon – which has worked with Israeli manufacturer Rafael and has helped market the Iron Dome system in the US. Continue Reading »

Gaza Rocket Fired This Morning Explodes In Open Field Without Injury or Damage

Palestinians in Gaza fired a rocket that exploded in an open field on the Israeli side of the border before dawn on Monday. No injuries or damages were reported.

According to the IDF, no rocket sirens were sounded because the rocket was headed toward an open field.

Both Israel & US Developing Laser Beams to Intercept Mortar Shells

Following the unprecedented success of IDF’s Iron Dome against Hamas’ terror-rockets, another new system is being developed to neutralize deadly mortar fire cheaply & effectively.

Mortar shells are less powerful than Katyusha rockets, but have been lethally used against Israel by terrorists in Gaza and Lebanon during the Second Lebanon War and Operation Protective Edge. Both Boeing and Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Ltd. (Israel’s second largest defense company) are working on laser defense systems against this threat.

IsraelDefense reports that Rafael’s system is known as Iron Beam, and could become operational within five years. Boeing, too, is working on a system, called “High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator”, which could be ready by mid-to-late 2017. Continue Reading »

Canada’s National Defense Ministry Buys Iron Dome System

Canada’s defense ministry purchases first ‘Medium Range Radar’ version of Israel’s Iron Dome for Cad$187.2 million.

Canada said Wednesday it will buy missile defense radars modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome from German defense contractor Rheinmetall.

The defense ministry put the cost of the 10 medium range radar systems at Cad$243.3 million ($187.2 million), according to AFP.

Canada’s National Defense Minister Jason Kenney hailed the deal, saying the technology had proved useful for Israel.

“Much like Israel’s successful Iron Dome radar technology, the Medium Range Radar system will be able to instantly track enemy fire aimed at Canadian armed forces personnel and help keep them safe during operations,” Kenney said. Continue Reading »

Iron Dome isn’t just for incoming missiles from Gaza or Lebanon. The missile defense system is also effective against drones (UAV), tests by Rafael, maker of the system, showed. The tests were documented in videos released by the companies Monday.

A spokesperson for Rafael said that the system had long had the capability of hitting drones, even before it was first used against missiles in 2011. Company sources said that the videos would be used to help market the system to countries that may not be concerned about incoming short-range missiles, which Iron Dome is generally used for, but wish to better defend their skies against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The IDF is being ultra-cautious since the air strike on Sunday that killed 6 Hezbollah & 6 Iranian Revolutionary Guards senior commanders near Quneitra, in the Syrian Golan Heights.

Israel has every right to be proud of the Iron Dome missile defense system and the US Senate on Tuesday reinforced its feeling. The Senate Appropriations Defense subcommittee backed the Israeli Government request for $621.6 million in 2015 for Israeli missile defense programs in general, including $351 million allocated specifically for Iron Dome.
