Arab States ask Azerbaijan’s President how he balances ties with Israel

The Azerbaijani leader reveled to a visiting American Rabbi that officials from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan “are looking for his guidance on how to navigate being a Muslim country committed to Islam, and at the same time reaching out and supporting Israel.”

Saudi, Pakistani, Afghani and Emirati officials are asking Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev about how to balance their identities as Muslim countries with a relationship with Israel, the Azerbaijani leader told an American rabbi on Monday.

Rabbi Marc Schneier , who met with Aliyev in Baku, said the Azerbaijani leader told him – without going into names – that officials from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan and Pakistan “are looking for his guidance on how to navigate being a Muslim country committed to Islam, and at the same time reaching out and supporting Israel.” Continue Reading »

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met on Wednesday–day three of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland–with world leaders in a series of diplomatic meetings that included German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Netanyahu reiterated to Merkel the need to make “real – not cosmetic – changes that will prevent Iran from going nuclear which would otherwise be assured by the agreement as it stands,” a government press release stated.

WASHINGTON – A US-led summit gathering Israel’s prime minister and the Palestinian Authority president on one stage with Levant and Gulf leaders would greatly benefit the region, and likely advance a stalled peace process, Azerbaijan’s envoy said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post.

Azerbaijan reports acquiring Israel’s Iron Dome missile system

 

Just days after Israel’s PM Netanyahu visited Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliyev revealed that his country has signed $5 billion worth of contracts to purchase weapons & security equipment from Israel.

Just days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Baku, Azerbaijani Defense Minister Javer Jamalov announced over the weekend that his country has signed a deal to purchase Israel’s Iron Dome aerial defense system.

Jamalov made the announcement on Saturday during a briefing with reporters. According to a report in the Azerbaijan Press Agency, Jamalov said that the “agreement was reached between the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry and Israel’s relevant structure”, likely a reference to Israel’s Defense Ministry. Azerbaijan is planning to acquire several Iron Dome air defense system batteries, Israel Hayom learned Thursday.

Iron Dome, manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, is designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells fired from distances of 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to 70 kilometers (43 miles).

The impending acquisition was announced ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Azerbaijan, scheduled for December. Continue Reading »

Revealed by Azerbaijan MP: Mossad neutralized Iranian terrorists at 2012 Eurovision event

 

MP Yevda Abramov, head of Baku’s Parliamentary Committee on Israel-Azerbaijan Relations, reported that Israel’s “Mossad divers neutralized an Iranian terrorists cell” targeting the 2012 Eurovision song contest in the capital.

Israeli intelligence agents were able to prevent a major terrorist attack in Azerbaijan during the 2012 Eurovision song contest in Baku, Azerbaijani MP Yevda Abramov revealed Tuesday.

Israel’s PM Netanyahu to make historic visits to 3 countries

 

As an “indication of the major change that is taking place in Israel’s global relations,” Netanyahu is set to visit 4 countries, including 3 that have yet to be visited by a sitting Israeli prime minister.

Binyamin Netanyahu will visit four countries in the coming months, including three that he said have never been visited by a sitting Israeli prime minister.

Netanyahu announced Sunday at the weekly Cabinet meeting that he will travel to Australia, Singapore and Kazakhstan, as well as Azerbaijan, where he made a quick stop in 1997.

Azerbaijan Buying a Dozen Israeli Naval Defense Vessels

Jane’s Report confirms that Azerbaijan, a Muslim nation purchased 12 advanced vessels, based on photographs from website of Azerbaijani president.

 

Azerbaijan is reportedly acquiring 21 new coast-guard vessels from Israel, according to Eurasianet.org.

While Azerbaijan made no formal announcement about such a purchase, Jane’s, the defense and intelligence publication, confirmed Thursday that the Azerbaijan Coast Guard ordered six Shaldag Mk V patrol boats and six Saar 62 offshore patrol vessels.

Jane’s based its assertion on images obtained in mid-July showing details of work being done on the vessels at a new shipyard.

Iran says joint Israeli-Azerbaijani drones were tracked along Iranian border

Iran’s Press TV reported Sunday that Israeli-Azeri drones – allegedly on a “secret spy mission” – were spotted flying over Iran and Karabakh’s common border.

According to the report Azerbaijan has been enlisting the help of “Israeli military advisors” in order to improve its drone capabilities.

According to the report, Baku “has been using Orbiter ultra-light drones assembled with the help of Israeli experts to carry out operations along the border with Karabakh.”

The report further quoted Iranian military experts as saying that Azerbaijan uses Elbit Systems’ Hermes-450 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for control and surveillance missions. Continue Reading »
