MIT Review puts Israeli desalination firm on ‘World’s Smartest Companies’ list

IDE Technologies ranks annual MIT Technology Review list of world’s smartest companies, “offering more affordable water desalination at a scale never before achieved.”

IDE Technologies, an Israeli water desalination company, has been named by the MIT Technology Review as one of the world’s 50 smartest companies for 2015.

IDE was ranked 18th on the annual MIT Technology Review list. Topping the list was Tesla Motors. Rounding out the top five were Xiaomi, Illumina, Alibaba and Counsyl.

“To make the list, a company must have truly innovative technology and a business model that is both practical and ambitious, with the result that it has set the agenda in its field over the past 12 months,” the MIT Technology Review said. Continue Reading »

Waze in Israel Launches Pilot Carpooling Program

A test program running in Tel Aviv using a new Waze application called RideWith, uses the navigation system to learn routes drivers most frequently take to school or work & matches them up with people looking for rides in the same direction.

“Israel is booming in terms of entrepreneurship because you have a culture that allows you to challenge authority and question everything. You don’t follow the rules,” Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt said on Sunday in an address to hundreds of students and researchers at the Weizmann Institute. Schmidt is currently on a short visit to Israel.

Schmidt was accompanied on his visit to the Weizmann Institute by Yossi Matias, vice-president for engineering and chief executive for R&D of Google Israel, as well as executives from the investment fund he heads, Innovation Endeavors, one of the most active funds in Israel in recent years. PayPal acquires Israeli cybersecurity firm, creating local hub in Jewish state

Details of the acquisition were not publicized, but some reports this week said PayPal, which is being spun off by online giant eBay, was paying $60 million for the Israeli CyActive.

Online payments group PayPal announced Tuesday it was acquiring Israeli cybersecurity firm CyActive and establishing a new security hub in Israel.

The terms of the deal were not announced, but some reports this week said PayPal, which is being spun off by online giant eBay, was paying $60 million for CyActive.

“Our goal is to extend our global security leadership, and bolster our efforts in predictive threat detection and prevention,” said PayPal chief technology officer James Barrese in a blog post.

German Air Force planes to get Israeli anti-missile lasers installed

Elbit Systems will install its J-Music anti-missile laser protection system on German Air Force transport planes, the Israeli defense firm announced Monday.

Elbit was awarded the contract by Germany’s DIEHL Defence company, and within a year, the system will be operational on new German A400M Airbus aircraft.

“Designed to protect large military and commercial aircraft against attacks by ground to air heat seeking man-portable missiles (MANPADS), the J-MUSIC systems, will be integrated into a multi-turret DIRCM (Direct Infra Red Counter-Measures) system, ensuring 360 degree protection of the aircraft,” Elbit said in a statement. Survey: Every minute 63 cyber crimes are committed in Israel

Since the beginning of the year, Israel Police dealt with 712 cases of the 30 million cases of cyber bullying that took place.

 

There were some 30 million cases of cyber bullying in Israel in the first 10 months of this year, victimizing about 387,000 people 20 or older, according to a survey by the Public Security Ministry. This works out to 63 cases of cyber bullying every minute.

Yet the police have opened an average of only 712 cyber-bullying cases a year over the past four years, accounting for a mere 0.19 percent of all police cases opened during this period.

Israeli Defense Company Signs $12.7M Contract With U.S. Army

In never-ending US-Israel cooperation, the Pentagon deal with Elbit Systems Ltd. strengthens ties even further.

The US subsidiary of Israeli defense company Elbit Systems Ltd. was awarded an approximately $12.7 million contract to provide Apache Aviator Integrated Helmets (AAIH) to the United States Army, it announced Sunday.

As part of the contract, work will be performed over a two-year period at Elbit Systems of America’s facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, foreign entrepreneurs are practically unable to get work visas; as result, many have to leave the country every few months to renew their tourist visas and go through time-consuming security checks at the airport.
