Tel Aviv Hosts ‘Largest Shabbat Dinner’ Attempt for New Guinness World Record

In an attempt to inspire world Jewry to connect to Shabbat in Israel’s largest city, a non-profit aims to host world record setting meal in Tel Aviv on June13th.

White City Shabbat, a non-profit organization dedicated to building Jewish life in Tel Aviv, has announced Monday that it will attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Shabbat Dinner.

The dinner, which is scheduled for June 13, 2014, will be held at the Tel Aviv Port. The organization aims to host 1,000 people at the dinner, including Israelis, new immigrants, and public figures.

The guest list will reportedly include Mayor Ron Huldai, former Chief Rabbi of Israel Rav Yisrael Meir Lau, and Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan. Continue Reading »

Tel Aviv Marathon won in record time by Kenyan runner

Top 3 runners all Kenyans with winner, Ezekiel Koech, 28, finishing in 2:14:40.

Despite excellent weather, 85 of 40,000 participants required medical assistance during race.

 

 

Kenyan runner Ezekiel Koech, 28, won the Tel Aviv Marathon on Friday, finishing the race with a record-breaking time of 2:14:40.

The second- and third-place finishers at the 42-kilometer (26.2-mile) race were also Kenyans who came to Israel especially for the marathon.

Despite the comfortable weather Friday, 85 runners required medical treatment during the race.

The 1st marathon runner was Jewish…not Greek

Tel Aviv construction site uncovered Byzantine period well

 

Work on site to continue after Byzantine period Water well unearthed during construction of medical clinic building in Tel Aviv.

Residents of the neighborhood of Ramat HaHayal in Tel Aviv were surprised to find that a well dated to the Byzantine period in Israel was unearthed in a construction site in one of the neighborhoods’ streets. The Israel Antiques Authority refused to provide details concerning the project.

Approved: 35,000 new residential units in metro Tel Aviv-Jaffa

 

Interior Ministry approves construction plans through 2025 for Tel Aviv- Jaffa.

Plan permits 35,000 new residential units, relocation of central bus station, including a high-rise construction restriction near the city center.

A new city plan for Tel Aviv-Jaffa was approved on Sunday, after the regional committee decided to open the plan for public discussion. The plan, which included the construction of 35,000 residential units, sets the planning direction for the city until 2025.

Tel Aviv, the city that never sleeps, is now making sure its residents and visitors can stay connected to the Internet at all times. The Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality has established 60 free Wi-Fi hot spots around the city, covering a total of 3.6 square kilometers (1.4 square miles), including shopping centers, main commercial streets, parks and beaches.

Tel Aviv has no plans to enforce Sabbath closure directive

Tel Aviv seems to be in no rush to begin strictly enforcing its own Sabbath closure regulations, and will likely ask for an extension on imposing the bylaw on businesses in the city that remain open between sunset Friday and sunset Saturday.

Tel Aviv launches its first electric bus

Maintenance costs for the Chinese-built electric bus are 25% lower than the regular diesel buses and energy costs are about a 1/3.

The Dan bus company rolled out its first electric bus on Tuesday as part of its campaign to replace some of its current diesel-powered fleet with fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly buses.

Tel Aviv Adopts Plan to Assimilate New Western Immigrants

 

A shift in demographic have caused Tel Aviv to accept “a strategy that puts more focus on the unique needs of the ‘new olim’ community.”

 

 

If you’ve spent the past decade or so in Tel Aviv, you’ve probably noticed the change. The city has increasingly found itself in the global spotlight, and English speakers – once relatively rare in the city – are hard to avoid on any street corner in central Tel Aviv. Even in the city’s south and in Jaffa, native English-speakers have become a prominent fixture of the first Hebrew city.

In local municipal tradition, young & old alike, are invited to Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square, to battle each other in the scorching heat with water pistols & balloons, using square’s fountain as ammunition!

Tel Aviv‘s annual water battle has returned. Like every summer, Friday afternoon saw hundreds of Tel Avivians of all ages swarm to the city’s Rabin Square. They came armed with squirt guns, water balloons, buckets and heavy water canons.

Jewish Youths Beaten by Gang of Foreign Workers for Protecting Girl

2 Israeli youths were severely beaten Saturday evening in Tel Aviv by 4 foreign workers, when they tried to protect a girl from being attacked.

Two Israeli youths were badly beaten Saturday night in the Kiryat Shalom neighborhood of Tel Aviv by four foreign workers. The youths had been trying to protect a Jewish girl from being attacked by two of the foreign workers. The Israeli youths were badly beaten by the workers, who used rocks, bricks, and bicycle chains, and threatened to murder the Israelis if they “interfered.”

Syria has put its most advanced missiles on standby with orders to hit Tel Aviv if Israel launches another strike on its territory, The Sunday Times reported overnight Sunday.

According to the British newspaper, reconnaissance satellites have been monitoring preparations by the Syrian army to deploy surface-to-surface Tishreen missiles.

An Israeli official told The New York Times that Israel, which has launched three recent attacks on Syria, was considering further strikes and warned President Bashar Assad that his government would face “crippling consequences” if he hit back at Israel. Continue Reading »
