Unearthed Steps to the Temple Mount Baffle Archaeologists Digging in City of David

A unique stepped structure, maybe the Temple Era ‘Stone of Claims’, has been excavated on the subterranean street ascending from the Siloam Pool to the Temple Mount.

An intriguing find consisting of an impressive pyramid-shaped staircase constructed of large ashlar stones was uncovered in an archaeological excavation currently conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority.

The excavation is located in the Jerusalem Walls National Park in the City of David, site of ancient Jerusalem, and is being carried out in cooperation with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and the City of David Foundation.

IBM Researchers in Haifa have developed an app for smartphones or smartwatches that can help detect attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms by analyzing the person’s movements.

Israeli researchers have developed a prototype of an app that can detect attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms by monitoring and analyzing hand movements.

Users could self-diagnose ADHD using a smartphone, a smartwatch or an activity band.

An Israeli student has created robots that might change the world of package deliveries for good.

Kobi Shikar, an engineering and design student at Shenkar School of Engineering in Ramat Gan, Israel, has designed a robotic delivery service, Transwheel.

The Daily Mail reported that the robots are one- wheeled drones, which balance themselves by using a similar system to the popular Segway. They contain a facial recognition software to identify recipients and have a GPS system in order to make their way around. Continue Reading »

Skilled medical staff an Israel’s Beilinson Hospital, conducted daring surgery with the aid of innovative technology, successfully saved mother’s life after an amniotic embolism during a c-section.

In a first of its kind event, a woman who was declared clinically dead after suffering an amniotic embolism during a c-section has woken up. Immediately after removing the infant, the mother experienced cardiac arrest as the clot entered her lungs.

An amniotic embolism occurs when amniotic fluid (which contains elements foreign to the mother’s blood) enters the mother’s blood vessels. The mother’s body then experiences an extreme allergic reaction as a result of the leak, which usually involves severe respiratory difficulties, skin discoloration, lung and heart collapse, diffuse bleeding and comas. An Israeli company is partnering with Lockheed Martin for joint research and development (R&D) to see if its radiation shielding technology – initially designed to protect nuclear first responders from gamma radiation – can be used to defend astronauts exploring deep space.

 

StemRad, based in Tel Aviv with a branch in Palo Alto, California, works with militaries, nuclear energy sources and governmental agencies to create protection equipment for first responders to radiological events and disasters.

Report: Microsoft Pays $320mil to Acquire Israeli Tech Security Adallom

Calcalist reports software giant closes its largest Israeli acquisition that will serve as basis of Microsoft’s upcoming cyber center in Israel.

Software giant Microsoft has bought Israeli cloud security company Adallom for $320 million, making it the largest acquisition made by the company in the country, according to Ynet’s sister publication Calcalist. 

 

Until now, Adallom has raised 50 million dollars from venture capital firms Sequoia Capital and Index Ventures, Zohar Zisapel, EMC Corporation and HP. According to estimates, Adallom is expected to serve as a basis for the establishment of Microsoft’s cyber center in Israel.

This is the second cyber company Microsoft has bought in the last year: at the end of 2014 it acquired the cyber security firm Aorato for 200 million dollars and has since bought N-trig for several tens of millions of dollars and Equivio for 50 million dollars. Continue Reading »

Facebook set to acquire Pebbles, another Israeli high-tech firm

With the purchase of an Israeli firm pioneering the field of virtual reality, Facebook will follow Apple, Intel & Microsoft who are already operating VR R&D capabilities in Israel.

Facebook is negotiating the acquisition of Israeli Pebbles Interfaces, which deals in one of the social network’s most promising current fields of activity – virtual and enhanced reality. Ynet’s sister publication Calcalist learned that after having acquired Oculus VR, Facebook now wants to buy Emil Alon and Nadav Grossinger’s company which develops gesture recognition technology.

OECD places Israel to head list of countries that spend the most on R&D

According to the OECD Israel is the country investing the most resources into Research and Development (R&D). R&D comprises of creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of human knowledge and to devise new applications based upon it. The World Economic Forum describes R&D as “the bedrock of innovation.”

MIT Review puts Israeli desalination firm on ‘World’s Smartest Companies’ list

IDE Technologies ranks annual MIT Technology Review list of world’s smartest companies, “offering more affordable water desalination at a scale never before achieved.”

IDE Technologies, an Israeli water desalination company, has been named by the MIT Technology Review as one of the world’s 50 smartest companies for 2015.

IDE was ranked 18th on the annual MIT Technology Review list. Topping the list was Tesla Motors. Rounding out the top five were Xiaomi, Illumina, Alibaba and Counsyl.

“To make the list, a company must have truly innovative technology and a business model that is both practical and ambitious, with the result that it has set the agenda in its field over the past 12 months,” the MIT Technology Review said. Continue Reading »

Doctoral student Liron Rozenkrantz and Professor Noam Sobel of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot believe the key to detecting autism in children may be reliant on the latter’s response to pleasant and unpleasant odors.

New Israeli waste-center to turn plastic detritus into fuel

The Environmental Services Company Ltd., a government body established in 1990 to handle hazardous waste in Israel, will soon begin operating a unique facility designed to recycle plastic and turn it into fuel.
