Israel suffered its first casualties of the current round of fighting with Palestinian militants after two people were killed and two others wounded Tuesday by rocket fire on the city of Ashkelon.

Magen David Adom said one of the victim was an 80-year-old resident of the city. The identity of the other victim is still unknown. Two other people sustained wounds in the rocket attack, including one person who is in a critical condition. Continue Reading »

Israeli city paints 3-D pedestrian crossing to curtail accidents

With road accidents still a major concern for the Jewish State, one southern city introduces a creative solution.

The southern Israeli city of Ashkelon unveiled the country’s first three-dimensional pedestrian crossing on Sunday.

Painted on the ground to give the illusion to incoming drivers they are coming into an obstacle, the innovative design was engineered to reduce the risk of collision.

Originally inspired by a 2016 Indian street-art project, the installation has been set up in several locations in the world, although it still hasn’t seen mass adoption.

“We are constantly thinking about how to improve road safety,” Ashkelon mayor Tomer Glam said, according to Israeli daily Maariv. Continue Reading »

Gaza rocket lands in open area near Ashkelon, IDF response imminent

 

Tonights attack, still without reports of injuries or damage, follows a similar unprovoked rocket-attack earlier this week, causing Israeli jets to strike 5 Hamas targets in retaliation.

A rocket exploded in an open area near the southern Ashkelon coastline Wednesday evening. There were no initial reports or injuries or damage.

Security forces were sweeping the area. Red alert sirens were not sounded as the rocket fell in an open area.

There has been no official claim of responsibility for the projectile’s launch, but Israel holds Hamas responsible for all fire coming from the Gaza Strip.

The incident comes just days after IDF jets struck five Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip earlier this week in retaliation for a rocket that landed in southern Israel overnight Sunday, the army confirmed on Monday. Continue Reading »

Israel Responds: IAF Jets Strike Gaza After Iron Dome Shot Down Palestinian Rocket

 

 

The Israeli Air Force reportedly struck a Hamas military training facility in the North of Gaza early Saturday morning in response to multiple rocket attacks from the coastal enclave the previous day.

Just before midnight Friday evening, an Iron Dome anti-rocket battery shot down a Gazan rocket over the southern city of Ashkelon.

Locals reported hearing a loud noise north of Ashkelon. No damage or injuries were reported.

The IDF later announced that the siren was prompted by a failed rocket launch from Gaza.

A rocket fired at Israel from Gaza on Saturday night triggered air raid sirens in the Ashkelon and Hof Ashkelon regions. The projectile apparently exploded in an open area, and security forces said they had begun to search for the rocket .

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Norwegian Foreign Minister Børge Brende were forced to run for cover Wednesday, when a rocket fired by Gaza militants struck a building in Ashkelon during their visit to the city.

12th grade student from Ashkelon hacked into his high school’s grading site & adjusted his grades by 10-15 points.


 

 
A high school student in Ashkelon was suspended from classes this week after he had hacked into the school’s grading site, which is usually reserved exclusively for the teaching staff, and increased his grades by 10 to 15 points.

The case came to light after one of the teachers realized that the scores displayed in the computer system did not match those she had in hard copy.

In order to blur the evidence, the student, who is in 12th grade, also modified some of his classmates’ scores.

A body discovered by rescue divers off Ashkelon‘s coast has been identified as Suliman Sariye, 19, one of the three brothers who were swept off to sea by a powerful current and presumed drowned on Thursday.

A diving team started searching on Friday morning for three brothers where last seen at a beach near Ashkelon Thursday night.

According to testimonies, the youngest brother bathed in the sea with a cousin. They shouted for help and the two elder brothers came to their rescue, but were swept into the sea themselves.

Gaza terrorists fired on southern Israel on Tuesday morning for the first time since the Pillar of Defense counter-terror operation in late 2012.

One rocket hit the city of Ashkelon, but did not cause injury. A second rocket apparently hit an open field near the city.

Residents said they had no warning of the impending strike.
