Legislation set to apply Israeli law to some 90 enclaves, but Netanyahu’s gov’t does not support measure.

Right-wing lobby says step needed after peace-talks collapsed.

Right-wing MKs called on the government Wednesday to annex about 90 Jewish settlements built on West Bank land, with one of them saying it was retaliation for the collapse of peace talks with the Palestinians a month ago.

While Israel has built dozens of enclaves since capturing the land in the 1967 Six Days, it has not applied its law to the territory other than near East Jerusalem, which it annexed as part of its capital in a move never recognized internationally. Continue Reading »

Both Labor & Likud Knesset members join effort to push controversial legislation to open up Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount compound that’s currently permitted for Muslims only.

Labor and Likud MKs have joined forces on a new bill that proposes to allow Jews to pray at the Temple Mount compound – for the first time since the destruction of the Second Temple, as Jews are currently barred from praying at the site.

Israel’s Minister of Defense: Let’s not delude ourselves, there is no Palestinian partner

Defense Minister Ya’alon tells Knesset committee that Jerusalem opposes Fatah-Hamas reconciliation, says it probably won’t come to fruition anyway.

 

 

The Palestinians are not a partner for peace, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Wednesday.

“There is no partner on the other side. That is the reality. Our soldiers are intelligent enough to understand the complex situation on the field and to know how to deal with it. There’s no immediate solution. We can’t delude ourselves,” he stated.

Largest Land Declaration by Gov’t in Gush Etzion in Past Decade

In a move to surely render the EU, American administration and Abbas’ PA livid, Israel’s Civil Administration declared a parcel of 242 acres of land in Gush Etzion as government-owned land, signaling new construction in the near future.

After years of research and a number of High Court cases, the Civil Adminstration on Sunday declared a parcel of 980 dunams (242 acres) of land in Gush Etzion as state-owned land. The declaration of the parcel as state-owned land is the first step in developing plans for eventual home construction.

This is the largest single state land declaration in Gush Etzion for more than a decade and observers said that it could signal a signifcant increase in construction in Gush Etzion in the coming years. Continue Reading »

Israel’s High Court of Justice issued Netanyahu’s gov’t ‘a yellow card’

The Knesset must appoint a chairperson for its sensitive Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee by May 1, the High Court of Justice ruled on Thursday.

In a rare move, the court issued an interim order compelling the parliament to name a chair for the committee after a petition on the matter was filed by jointly by Labor Party chairman and opposition chief Isaac Herzog and the transparency NGO Movement for Quality in Government. Former Palestinian Knesset Member Convicted of Contacting Israel’s Enemies

Former Israel MK of the Balad party, Said Nafa, met in Syria with PFLP-GC leader. Nafa was convicted of both illegally exiting to an enemy state & assisting others to do so as well.

The Nazareth District Court convicted former Balad Knesset Member Said Nafa of contact with a foreign agent, illegal exit to an enemy country and aiding other to exist to an enemy country.

Knesset passes legislation to increase support to Holocaust survivors

 

The new Bill calls for additional aid from NIS 100 million to NIS 135 million annually to go directly to survivors, with further annual increases.

 

 

The Knesset approved on Wednesday the second and third (final) readings of a bill to amend the Restitution of Holocaust Victims’ Assets Law.

The measure sets the end of the Company for Location and Restitution of Holocaust Victims’ Assets’ operations as December 31, 2017, as opposed to 2021, as previously stipulated in the law.

The new law also calls for an increase in aid to Holocaust survivors from NIS 100 million to NIS 135m.

Court criticizes Knesset for neglecting to regulate ritual circumcision

An Ashkelon judge lambastes Israel’s parliament for continually failing to manage this problem in its ruling acquitting 2 men of performing a circumcision without licenses.

Ashkelon Magistrate’s Court Judge Haim Nachmias issued the rare criticism in his verdict acquitting two mohels, or “ritual circumcisers,” on charges of negligence.

“The legislators would be wise to regulate the profession of performing circumcisions, and the supervision of those performing this religious commandment, through legislation,” he wrote.

British Prime Minister David Cameron addressed attempts to boycott Israel in his Knesset address today, and conveyed a clear message: “Britain opposes the boycott against Israel.”

“We want to right the wrongs of the past,” Cameron stated. “We believe in democracy and the freedom and equality of all religions. Israel’s delegitimization is wrong, and we will make sure it fails.”

Regarding the recent push to ban kosher slaughter (shechita) in the UK, Cameron added that “ritual slaughter will be legal in the UK as long as I am Prime Minister.”

Israel Airport to undergo sensitivity course on ‘humiliating’ security procedures

 

Knesset ruling follows public outcry after improper treatment of an Arab Israeli teacher, who underwent a strip-search.

The Knesset Public Petitions Committee decided on Monday that Israeli Airport Authority officials will meet with people who have been forced into invasive security checks. The meetings, which will involve Arab MKs will be part of an attempt to enlighten airport officials on the often humiliating security searches that Arabs have to go through.
